Yea i called asap when i got the message on my phone. My account sends me txt message of my balance everytime i make a purchase or charge of 15 dollars or more. I called right after that and the bank said i couldnt make an official claim until the charges post onto my account. But i guess its a waiting game now.

I have used paypal for over ten years. Never had any issues. When it comes to spam never give out your private information. Always go to the source. PayPal and your bank will never send you an email asking you for private information. So when you see this bet your money its spam. Just be careful...

When you get an email stating it's from a service like paypal, amazon, ebay or what not, (those are the most commonly used websites to "phish" for login info, and yeah they actually use the term 'phish'), it's always a good idea to check that the link your clicking on is ACTUALLY going to the stated site.

Everything in the email will look like it's official, and even the links look correct, but what happens is once you click the link it will take you to a different website that looks exactly like the site you think your at. A way to check is to look at your address bar on your browser.

When it's a scam, the URL in the address bar will look like

"http://www.some-other-website.com/paypal/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_login-run" (paypal as an example)

If the URL you go to doesn't say exactly what the intended website should be, such as paypal.com, amazon.com, etc., It is an attempt to collect multiple account usernames and passwords. What these scammers do is try to trick folks into trying to login to the intended website, and what it actually does is add your username and password to a file, at which they will collect all the usernames and passwords and individually try them until they get one that works. Once they have a working account, they'll go wild purchasing things using the account's stored credit card / bank account info.

I've dealt with these types of scams a lot over the years with my current employer, and most often they originate from a computer that has been hacked previously and is being used to harvest usernames and passwords for the sites.

If it's a legitimate email and request from the site, it will always take you to a url on the website and it should look like these. Any variation from the main website's domain name should be suspect!

https://www.paypal.com

https://www.amazon.com

Hope this helps folks with what to look for.
