Need some help here. My dad just retired from work. We are finally going to get to do some fishing together. Problem is he has'nt fished in years. I would like to set him up with a rod and reel. I need somthing that would be easy for him to cast, yet hold up to bass fishing. Baitcasters are out, im thinking spincast to start with. Any recomendations that will not break the bank?

you might want to consider a bass pro spinning reel, I have started replacing my shimano reels with BPS and not regretted it. Falcon rod or shimano rods will be about right.

Not many fishermen fish with spincast any more, but the Zebco 33 has been a tried and true reliable reel for decades. You could marry it to an Ugly Stick for a total of less than $60, probably. If you are talking spinning, pay attention to the above. One thing I do NOT like about BPS, they seem to be disposable reels, use a year and then buy another one. Of course, w/in that year, he might decide to convert to baitcasting anyway.

Hope this helps. Tight lines, keep safe and good luck.

The Zebco Hoss will carry larger line. The 33 doesn't like anything over 12 lbs. I know you want find a Hoss but you may find a 33 Hawg. The Hawg works great with 14 to 20 lb. line. He will enjoy just pushing the button and making the cast. The key to Zebco success is: keep it clean and keep new line on it. Southwest supply may have some of these used but like new. call: 214-630-8161

I had forgotten about the Hawg. Here is a link to Academy for the combo 733 rod and reel for $30.

https://www.academy.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/TopNavCatalogSearch?Ntt=zebco+733&Ntk=All&langId=-1&storeId=10151&catalogId=10051&N=0&krypto=iCh8P1m15tXJnSJzzSyPFw%3D%3D

Hope this helps. Tell your dad CONGRATS on mkaing it to retirement.

If he doesn't go with a spinning set up, that Hawg combo might be the ticket...

If you're going with a spinning rod, you might take a look on West Marine's website right now, they've got some good rods on sale there.
