Problem:
Engine will not idle for extended periods of time.
After dying the engine will not restart until priming bulb is refilled (pumped up}.
Am I looking at: a- Weak fuel pump
b- Air leak in fuel line from tank to pump.
I see no indication of hose leakage. I assume that if the fuel hose will leak enough air to lose prime that it would also show signs of fuel leakage.
This engine requires that user mixes fuel and oil.
Am I on the right track ?
Thanks
J.B.

I have the same motor and had simiar problem. The primer bulb was collapsing(Atwood) I changed it out with a new OEM bulb and haven't had the problem since.

JB, once you prime the bulb for the first time, it should not have to be primed again. It should remain hard. When it does not remain hard, and you cant find an air leak in the lines, it is most likely the fuel pump.

Just to verify, the vent on your gas tank is open, correct?

Tyler;
My tank is a 24 gal. built-in.
All appears to be in order with the piping.
This thing will run all day long at speed.
It's when I,m scouting an area at idle speed that the problem occurs.
I'm going to BPS tomorrow to find out what sort of combination this Mercury/Force is so I can pick up the proper service manual.
I'm also going to try tx6158's advise and replace the bulb. It's the original so it can't hurt.
Thanks a bunch for the input, guys.
J.B.

If it is the original bulb that could very well be the issue. A manual is also a great thing to have. Can save you lots of money. I rebuilt my Mercury and do all maintenance and repairs myself.

If it isn't the bulb, I would just follow your fuel line until you locate the problem.

Hey, Tyler;
Picked up a new bulb at BPS.
Harry says it's the newest and greatest.
The original was shedding carbon black badly and compressing was like squeezing a marshmellow and the new one is like a tennis ball.
I'm going to the lake place for a few weeks this weekend and we'll see if I get the same results as tx6158.
Harry also ordered the correct service manual.
He's an OK guy.

Hey, guys;
It was the bulb.
Thanks again for the suggestions.I believe she'd run a whole tank out without a hiccup.
