Jackie Kennedy (a buddy of mine and seasoned blue cat guide on cedar creek lake) and I spent half the day on the Trinity yesterday targeting alligator gar. We started out before the sun was over the trees and fished until about 1:30 p.m. Fish bit well although we struggled to make positive hook ups. 8 good bites out of which we hung three trophy fish, managing to land one of them. Also had a fish around 4.5' throw the bait right beside the boat, saved us the trouble of unhooking it. The big girl that got landed went 6'9" and measured 32.5" in girth. We left them biting because of the heat, I have no doubt we could have landed a couple more.



Although the heat this time of year is nearly unbearable and this year is turning out to be one of the worst of the worst alligator gar remain active and are at their most predictable state and easiest to catch. If anyone wants to catch a freshwater giant that has the potential to pull you out of the boat or off the bank this is it. There's nothing in southern fresh water that pulls like a 100#+ alligator gar. I watched as Dawson was jerked several feet more than once yesterday. Not for the faint of heart.
