I want to start fishing the Guadalupe and Blanco rivers for Trout and Smallmouth, but have no idea where to go.

I live in Austin, and I am fimiliar with the Hill Country rivers, but do not know of any public access or available crossings.

I heard there is Guadalupe access below Canyon Dam, the 3rd crossing, and the bridge in Gruene. As far as the Blanco goes, I have no idea where to start.

Any help would be appeiciated.

I used to live in Austin as well so I know the pain of trying to find a place to fish. Theres only one problem to calling austin fly fishers, you have to pay for it. It doesnt matter where you set to fish on the Guad you cant fish it without having to pay for something. If you sign up with Austin Fly Fishers then you have to pay an annual fee but you have access to all the points in the river. If you want to avoid that, like I did, then you either have to pay a camp ground for a daily usage or find someone that lives on the water and ask them if its ok to fish off their property. Good luck trying to do that. People around those parts get real nervous about letting anyone fish "Their Water" wich is a bunch of bull truds to begin with. The water should be open to all, like in Montana or Colorado but thats not the case in Texas. How someone owns water is besides the point, they at least think they do which makes it hard for the everyday person to fish it. My best advice would be to just stop at a camp ground along the water and ask them. Most of the time its something like $5 a day to park and fish but its worth it in my mind.

Hey Texan i live here in austin as well, if your looking for a partner i can help i know the Guad somewhat good. Only problem is i am a student without a car,if you want shoot me an email..... oh and on the other subject The people that live on the Guadalupe dont own parts of the river just the bank that leads up to it so if your feet are in the water you are on public property. thats why they cant charge the tubers going down river, if they did own the river then they could charge a toll.

Check out this link to the TPWD river access guide. It is a work in progress, but it has decent information on the Guad and some on the Blanco.

You might also want to pick up a copy of Fly Fishing the Texas Hill Country. It is out of print, but Hill Country Outfitters in Fredericksburg still has some in stock. It gives a lot of good information about access points in the Hill Country as well as some on tactics and flies.
