What with these holidays and all the maddness I have not wet a line.

Any of you fly flingers out there who can post a report that will inspire the rest of us to play hookey and go trout fishing for some of those nice little TPWD stockers?

Had a great day yesterday and Friday. Friday, I caught 5 in about an hour. Yesterday, I took all 3 kids and my wife (who does not fish but cheers). We stopped at 18 in about 2 hours. All three kids caught fish, all on flies, doing everything themselves (except getting the fish off the hook). We were fishing with Zug Bugs, Prince Nymphs, and a Copper John. The largest fish was 12.5 inches and 3/4 of a pound. The fish were stocked on 12/2 but there is little fishing pressure on them (of the 5 or 6 trips that I have made, I saw my second other person fishing yesterday). Overall, LOTS of FUN!!!! And to top it off, I am off work for the next TWO WEEKS!

Fish were stocked last Tuesday. I'm guessing they had more pressure than I thought. Fished with all the above flies without a strike. I did see a few folks catch a couple on powerbait.

Just a thought, and I am not there so am no expert. But perhaps trying a fly off of a dropper so that it could be fished oh so sloooolwwwy, might do the trick?

Droppers can be big old dry flies, or poppers or a simple Wal-Mart styrofoam bobber cut down as necessary.

Went out to PK on Friday. Caught two on a Griffiths Gnat, and a buddy caught 6 on a Pheasant Tail beadhead. Fishing was tough, not that many risers. But if you could find them, you could catch them. They seem a little smaller than last year. They were maybe 7-8 inches long.

I have been fishing deeper and with a slow retrieve. Have not seen many rise, but then it has been rather sunny.

deeper? how deep is deeper?

I did see one rise--that was the one that was caught--caught on an in-line spinner.

I am letting the weighted fly sink around ten seconds or so. I count 1/1000, 2/1000, etc. That is what has worked for me. Also on the retrieve, I strip in about 4-6" and then pause about 2-3 seconds, sometimes more.

I took three kids over to Navasota Monday afternoon to fly fish for trout. Millerwb was right, no one was there fishing, nor were there any sign that anyone had been there. We had no problem catching about a dozen or so and ended up keeping ten. We all missed several, short strikes and otherwise missed the hook-up. Most everything was caught using small dark wooly boogers, with beadheads of gold or copper, fished 3 feet under a strike indicator, (bobber style) .

Cleaning trout is easy. Start at the back vent and slice forward to the gills. Dig out the guts and scrape the inside backbone with your finger to get the dark streak out from under the spine. Generally you cook them whole.

The trout are not going to be dropped until early February. That will coincide with the Kids' Fishing Derby that McKinney Parks Dept. puts on every year. The kids will get first shot that morning and after that its opened up for all the rest. Its always a ton of fun!

There are trout being dropped in Bethany Ponds in Allen however trout stocking schedule so that might be a place to drop a line.
