Just a quick tip..next time you go, try casting into a "foamy strip" on the water. TXfly mentioned it earlier.
The foam strip that you are seeing happens to be carrying in the current with it some of the largest numbers of insect larvae to be found on the river. Last weeks sample I took out of a foam strip up here showed very high numbers of scud bugs, and as always dying midge larvae which trout seem to love, alot of flyfishers hate to fish them due to their hook sizes.(hint: if fish are jumping completely out of the water in a foamy strip,it could very well indicate the feeding of an "emerging" insect.) There is always a good fly to decide on here for the trout every year. The question is which one is always producing, and which one is the absolute best? Alot of really good ones can be bought, but if you really want to slam them good here, it's going to have to be the perfect matching game. The best thing to do in most cases is to collect some insects, take them home and let them dry out for a day or so. Learn how to tie a simple version. In the few months to come the trout will indeed be harder and harder to catch if they have been caught and released over and over again (unless they were of the most recent drop). The difficulty within a season up here is highly predictable for us that live here, and the trend always seems to be that towards the end of the season, your skills as a fisherman (especially ones of the fly) are tested thoroughly.

Troutman, as a stream biologist, you are the perfect person to talk about the PK situation, and certainly to discuss a few other questions of mine. This thread is dead and gone as far as I'm concerned; I'm going to start a new thread for a few things on my mind....

Try walking down stream towards the big hole. You will see risers in the open water. They will hit real small knats, or midges. Size 22-26. Also try red copper johns, and olive buggers. I will be there on the 11th. Later, Russell
If anyone is interested in getting this chapter going again, let's talk.
