Trout Bombers

I expect the entire spectrum of responses to this one. So I have my foil hat on underneath my Kevlar helmet.

That was a really interesting article, so much so that it makes me want to read the book. Before this I had little interest in that work. I have often wondered why Rainbow Trout were planted and not other species.

I am sure that some will think this practice a horrible way to seed fish in a lake. If you take a step back and look at the Earth's history and geologic processes in the rock record, then you get a different perspective on the whole idea of "pollution." I am not saying that humans do not need to be better stewards of the Earth, but rather we are very arrogant in the way we think we are "changing" the Earth. These ideas are very contoversial, and many people will make me a villian. They are free to do this, but I am also free to have my beliefs as well.

To conclude, thanks for sharing this article. I think that I will add this book to my reading list.

Good book. Worth reading. I've heard the author speak, and his perspective is interesting.

I don't have a problem with it. To answer a question asked earlier, Rainbows are stocked because they are the heartiest trout species. They are able to stand a wider range of temperature, and dirtier water than other species.

Most of the alpine lakes that were, and indeed, sill are stocked were void of fish before the stocking plans were instated, and, really, what good is a lake with no fish?

The introduction of fish does change the balance of nature in said lake, but the fish that don't survive add a protein spike in the water, and helps existing aquatic species to adjust to the change in their enviroment.

If it gives someone a new place to fish, it's all good.

they need to air dump a few thousand into Lake Fork this winter, that would be pretty awesome.

The second time they did that it would look like the sharks smashing seals off of the South African coast. Who has a good recipe for a drop-stunned hatchery rainbow? smile

one of gierach's book quoted a fish & game specialist saying the survival rate of air dropped trout was pretty good "when we hit the lake."

Hooking a fish is like playing string with a cat. The exact size, shape, color of string matters less than how you wiggle it- and little cats are easier to fool than big ones. John Gierach
