The arrow trick may work for Longnose and such, but with the hooks we use I doubt it would work on an Alligator Gar, but thanks anyway. Besides we do not use stainless hooks anyway so they don't last long in the Brazos as it has a fairly high salinity.

Gator gar have several rows of teeth ,and on a hundred lb gar you cant force a thin pocket knife between them much less a 1/4 arrow.
To get this gars mouth open so they could take pics of his teeth and gullet took Darrel pulling up on a rope around his snout and me pushing down with a machete on the bottom jaw and putting out all we had , We aint little folks I weigh better than 200 and Darrel weighs more than I do ,so they are tough.Making these big gar say ahhh isnt easy and does stress them so we cut the leader and turn them back.

i dont use stainless hooks either i use 12/0 gamakatsu big river hooks and the arrow trick worked on an 80inch alligator gar i caught and released and various others in the past.all im saying is i would hate for a big gar to die or starve to death just because of a hook and piece of leader.if you dont want to try it thats your right but if someone else reads this and tries it and it it saves a big gar then iv done my good deed for the day.

Thanks for the thumbs up on the boats , as far as the leaders and hooks being left ,they will be gone in a few days. I have fished this area for a long time and never found a fish washed up after being released this way . The only big gar I have seen hurt bad by catching on a rod and reel were ,bleeding from the hook set,or from folks trying to get the hooks out.
Different strokes for different folks. Sounds like we are both trying to take care of the resource even though we dont agree.
