Here is my next question. My reels are all ready to go and now I am working on fly reels my daughter is going to use.

I was given another rod for my daughter to use and a reel that was suppose to be compatible for it.

We bought her a fly rod and reel at least 6 years ago maybe longer. She has moved alot and the rod got broken but she still has the reel brand new in the box. It is a Flueger Metalist and a little sticker in the box says it is tapered fly line WF-7-F.

The fly rod that she will use is a 5/6 Browning, will this reel and line be compatible with that or not? This is a much nicer reel than the other one. Also do I have to dress this line since it is brand new?

Thanks

hey there

The Pfluegers are quite fine reels, they do the job they were made to do. Now I would not want to go after some drag-screaming tuna or redfish but heck, that's a whole nother area smile

The 7 weight line will likely be OK on the 5/6 weight rod. It might even be perfect. I have a Browning 6 weight rod that cast like a pig...up until the day that I put a five weight line on it just for grins. It was an entirely different rod after that. The sticker says six but the casting of it says five. So have her try the seven weight line. It will either cast well at short distances and then get pretty heavy and boggy at longer distances (over thirty or fourty feet) or else it might, as I mentioned, be a dream. Give her a go and see if a new line is needed or not. (BTW, those fly lines at Wal Mart, the Wal Marts that carry them, are great little fly lines for very little money).

Holler and let us know how it goes.

As mentioned, it may actually be a plus to go up one weight in line. Try it out and you will probably be pleased with it. Fly reels, except for the extreme situations like Tarpon and fish that run like bonefish, are way overrated, overpriced, and overhyped. Basically, they are just line holders except for special situations requiring quality drag.
