I was wanting to know if the Grayline 17 gal would work well in this heat for not killing shad. Space is limited on my boat and this seems the right size. Chaeper alternative are not working. I keep killing all the bait.

Really depends on how many baits you want to keep alive and for how long.

ya it should work. Like (Brandoa) said it depends how long and how many. if you use non iodined salt adn foam off and if you use ice then you need chlorine remover. along wiht some stress relief you should be fine.

Keep some declorinated ice handy and you can keep them even better.

I use butter bowls with declorinated water in my 50 gal Greyline. Drop one in every half hour while fishing in daylight hours.

One every hour after dark.

I have the 24 gallon with w 2 pumps and do not have a problem keeping shad alive. I start with treated tap water and add ice throughout the day.

I use treated ice because I will try to keep them for a week.

The best thing to do is remove shad that die as soon as possible. Don't be shy with the salt.

I just bought this exact tank and you won't be sorry. It is phenomenal. You don't need the internal blue paint (in my opinion) because the Shad Keeper turns the water blue. You can PM me and I'll give you the exact quantities of what I use to keep them alive. Besides my first week of the thing, I don't kill the shad. I had quite a few baits go south on me at first but now I have it down to a science. Cold water is huge.... You've got to keep them cool.

One cup of Shad Keeper, one cup of non-iodized salt. 3/4 of a ten pound bag of ice. A tablespoon of dechlorinator (one squirt) and then just add a couple of drops of Foam Off every hour or two as needed. You will need more ice around noon and a more dechlorinator as needed.

George sends you all of this stuff and as he will tell you, keep the lid of your tank open ALWAYS, unless you are travelling. You need to get that ammonia and CO2 exchanged off of the top of the water. He'll tell you how to do the filter or just PM me and I'll give you my cell phone number and walk you through it.

You won't be sorry with a Sunshine Grayline. Are they expensive? Heck yes. Is it worth it to have lively bait all day every day you are on the lake? Darn straight. wink

Jackson

P.S. If you want the best bang for your buck, buy the fancy one with the built in aerator. I can keep 50 shad alive and frisky easily with this tank.

I also have the same tank (17 gal). Had approx 100 3" shad for 10 hrs with no problem. A little crowded at 1st, but filters did there job nicely. It was 109* that day, so I did use ice as needed.

I usually add 1/2 of a salt container (non Iodine) about 1+ cups or 13oz. and foam off if needed. I use lake water.

I keep a 1 gal. freezer bag full of pre-cut filter material from WalMart ( Type as recommended by George) on my boat , if I need to change the throw away filters, I have plenty.

So pretty much as the rest of the guy's have said.

Western,

Where in wal-mart do you get the filter material?

Oh ya.... I use lake water as Western mentioned.

And George sends you a huge bag of the cloth from Wal-Mart. I also do as Western mentioned and keep a gallon sized bag full of the pre-cut squares to grab when needed.

I also bought the extension cord that he sells because I take my tank in and out of my boat. (I'm also cramped for space) It has a handy quick release plug on it so you aren't messing with wing nuts and battery connections each time.
