Hey all,
I grew up fishing for trout in the Black Hills of South Dakota and have caught many different species on my fly rods. I have not however used them down here much. I own a bass boat and though I often pack a 5, 7 or 9 wht rod, I never seem to pull it out and use it! My goal this summer is to be sitting in the middle of a big school of wht bass on Ray Robert, hammering them on my fly rod.

Any of you out there that might be interested in hooking up for a little fly-rod bass fishing or even a combination of regular rods and fly rods let me know.

Any chance you'll be moving to Austin soon? wink

I lived in Austin years ago (late 80's) had a canoe back then and used to fish Travis a lot. Hey maybe we should meet at Whitney some time? Though I must admit I fished it once and did not do well at all!

P.S. My dad is a guide in the Black Hills check out this trout. http://www.pintime.com/images/BIG_BOW.JPG

John

There will be some takers. I have never fished Ray Bob so would not be able to point out any good spots. You might also try the folks over at Texas Fly Report .

I would put in at Jordan Park or Buck Creek then head over the east of Wolf Island. Also the area around Pilot Point Creek. Another area is Clear Bay. Just watch for the birds.

I never bring my fly rod, but I would suggest 9 wt and some big streamers, clousers, etc. I haven't been to Roberts in a month or so but I did catch over 100 on a 1/2 Rat-L-Trap just outside of Pilot Point Creek last time I was there.

I will probably opt for the 5 or 7 wt I like the lighter rods. I've hit Wolf before just never pulled the fly rod out!

I'd love to join you but I'm probably too darn busy for a while. We just signed a contract on our house and are making an offer on a new one tomorrow.

I got a PT 185 about 6 weeks ago with a 90HP on it most specifically to chase sandbass on the fly rod. I've had it out about 10-12 times and I've caught sandbass probably 4 or 5 of those times but just this last Friday I busted my prop on Grapevine so I'm already learning the joys of boat ownership!!! Oh well.

Sandbass on a fly rod is just way too much fun.

Hey Boom! I have the same goal. I will probably start in mid July. They are really schooling well by then. I could meet you at Jordan Park and you can follow me around or go with me, either one. Maybe get in on some topwater bass action before sunset or somethin'. My goal this year is to flyrod for whites and Kentucky's. I use another lake for Kentucky's that's full of them. Use my e-mail if needed. The whites at Bob are gettin' a decent size and should be lot's of fun! cheers

Boom, check out TFR, as Rrhyne recommended...

You live in Plano, pretty close to me...
You can try emailing me if you want to fish sometime... I'll be happy to join you.

I've caught tons of white bass on fly rod. I have 3 favorite lakes for doing that:
1. Cedar Creek - you get huge magnum sandbass there. Go to texasflyreport.com and check out the Fishing Reports section under "Cedar Creek". Best times are Spring or Fall, where you can catch a mix of sandbass and hybrids. All the action is at night under lit docks.
2. Ray Hubbard - its hit or miss for finding them on top, but if you cant find them on top, get some sinking fly line, or a sinking head. You can fish deep with that and get some sandbass that way too.
3 Lewisville - similar to Ray Hubbard...

John 5:24 Very truly I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.

1Peter 3:18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit.

Boom,
Sounds like fun. I've caught sandies and hybrids on Lewisville while fishing with my buddy Don the Angler (guide type person) I'd be more than a little interested in joining you in your search for Sandies, I would, however, suggest the 9wt in case you latch into one of those big rude hybrids.
They might eat your fly and use a 5 or 6wt for their toothpick. laugh Take a look at the TPWD website and establish what the lake record is for flyrod on that body of water and run a couple copies of the paperwork to take with you. By the way CCabal has the LMB record on Lavon.
Drop me an e-mail sometime...sandies and hybrids on the fly... ohhhhhh myyyyy laugh

Bill,
this fall, I'm going to have to kidnap you and take you to Cedar Creek, and at gunpoint, have you cast a clouser into a lit dock, and then have you fight a 7lb hybrid till your arm hurts wink

P.S. I received the updated certificate for flyrod crappie record @ Grapevine. Joedy Gray (TPWD Awards Guru and all round good guy)said they're going to update the website the beginning of July. Got any new records?

Actually, I went fishing yesterday morning at Hubbard, and caught a 2# bass that I will submit for a record. Plus a 0.2# longear sunfish wink

I know the bass is rather wimpy, but Hubbard needed some more records. My friend Steve has informed me he will be gunning for that record too, so it should be fun and interesting.

So Bill, have you been to Lavon at all this summer? I've been a few times, but havnt caught anything bigger than 2.5# yet

Cristian,
Nope, been busy bothering fish elsewher.

Boom,
I see you live in Plano...I'm in Allen...we're to close NOT to get together. The sandies and hybrids have been on or near the surface at Lewisville.
Have you had a chance to get after the fish yet?
