Skeeter185 and hungup,
I understand your viewpoints. One point that has not been discussed in this string of posts is that we should also focus on those who are buying this stolen property. I have bought used rods and reels, but only from people who I knew legitimately obtained them. Using your logic, should we also shoot the people who buy stolen goods as well as those doing the stealing? They are equally contributing to the injustice. If not, what should be their punishment?
My basic point is about the value of life versus property. God has already given us detailed guidelines on how we should strive to live and the rules we should follow.
I am only trying to add a different, and hopefully Biblical, perspective to those already offered.

WOW you guys sure are gun ho! Well i think if i came up on someone stealing my rods and things out of my boat i know the first thing i would do would be pull my 45 in one hand and my 7foot ugly stick in the other. Trust me a big old ugly stick across the face will do just fine and the 45 will hold them till the cops get there. I dont know about all of this civil court **** but in roundrock tx i know of a friend who used a 45 on a guy who was stealing something that was in his car in his garage and he had no trouble with the civil courts.
I didnt know I couldnt do that!

Back in the mid eighty's when I fished bass tournaments, my brother and I pulled into Falcon State park about 11 p.m. on a friday night. The camp area was deserted. We awoke at around 4 to get everything together fix some breakfast and launch well ahead of the crowd. After checking the back of the boat I noticed all my rod and reels and tackle boxes were missing. They had been taken out of the boat by someone who just went out of their way and take a chance that nobody was awake inside that camper while they did their dirty work. Theives don't change just because this is 2005. If anything they are bolder. Take precautions and do what you feel is right, but you and you alone are going to be held responsible in the end for whatever happens.

I understand and appreciate your point of view here. To start off with I'm not advocating that anyone shoots anyone. I'm not looking for a REASON to shoot anybody, especially someone who unknowingly buys stolen goods as you suggest, thats a BIG reach. My point is that if someone is caught stealing form me, I will take whatever means necessary to stop it and I'm in hopes that others would do the same. If not, the thieves will continue to be the winners and continue to prey on us all.

Sorry I don't respond so readily. I'm usually on here at night. Those that don't think you'll go to court for deadly force: The mourning mother, wife, sister or whoever will be contacted by anti-gun lawyers and they can file a suit for wrongful death. They will win. Not necessarily the suit, but you will be out thousands of dollars in defense money. Now your broke and they got a piece of you. I have been there, financially broken for hiring defense for an inocent man.

I think this was mentioned on an earlier thread, but carry a shotgun. It's not against the law and you don't need a CHL. During duck season it's not uncommon to see people in a motel carrying a shotgun. Don't try to hide the fact you have one when unloading your gear at the motel. Your theif may be watching. You don't have to load it either. This is for the audio effect. Just keep it right next to the door of the room for easy access. A couple shells in a holder on the stock you can load it in the dark with both eyes closed. Now for the audio effect. You catch someone or they look suspecious you just jack the action, SLLACKK-CLACK! You can hear that unmistaking sound across an entire parking lot. Then you just follow the trail of dropped rods and reels while calling the cops. Chances are the theif will get the message. Take it with you when you launch and don't leave it in the truck or motel room. Fits perfectly in the rod locker.

And even if he does survive, what is he going to testify? "I was minding my own business, breaking the locks off Razorback's boat with my crowbar and stealing his rods and reels, when he just showed up out of nowhere and blowed me away..."
I won't be the one who causes this situation to occur. If I decided to break into Billy Bob's chop shop or meth lab to steal some of his stuff, I would go there with the expectation that I just might end up on the business end of a gun. Kinda goes with the profession, so to speak. Oh RB....that is the reason you will be in court! Because he is not there. But his wife and snotty crying kids will be and any first year law student can bring a whole string of bubbas to testify what a fine man he was. And the jury looks over at you and thinks you terrible man, you could have just called the LE. And your lawyer is trying to decide if he will invest your money or take a long vacation. No, it's a sure loss for you even if you win. Happens every day.

Tell you what. If all the Clubs with tournaments coming up there change their plans and go somewhere else and the people going there for the weekend call the Hotels/Motels and explain to them they are going somewhere else because it is not save to stay there. You will see something done. MONEY always talks!!!!!!!!!!!

Now that works for me, Sam65.
I think the marina and even the county would take notice when that happens. Without the tax dollars coming in the county will take a better look at the situation. The marina would realize that we are serious.
At our RV Park they have aready taken action, because everyone said this wasn't going to fly. Do something now.
Money does talk.

Outlaw, I hope you keep in mind that the theives may be holding more than an Ugly Stick themselves. Between and Ugly Stick and a 357 mag, my money would bet on the 357. I agree that you should use the least amount of force it takes to handle the situation, but you can't assume that people that steal for a living won't be prepared to do battle if they are caught. My motto is hope for the best, but be prepared for the worst. P.S. a baseball bat used in a fight can end up being pretty deadly itself. If you swing it hard eneough to do any good it all depends on placement just like a bullet. If you don't swing it hard enough you might end up being on the business end of it yourself.

To anyone dumb enough to shoot a thief who is NOT on their property and who poses NO threat of " immediate bodily harm " to you: Please do. Go ahead! This way...the world will be rid of two idiots at one time. Forget the law....after all, you're all lawyers right? You all have law degrees? From what Ive seen, youre all experts at interpreting the law too! I almost forgot that CHL diploma you have so proudly displayed on your wall gives you license to do whatever you want. After all, they taught you EVERYTHING in the class...Im sorry, I forgot, you're all geniuses now. All you needed was one little class. With that said, in that moment when youre thinking of being so ever-loving stupid, please do. While I can't guarantee which one of you (YOU or the THEIF) will win the Darwin Award, I can guarantee that the one pulling the trigger will be in jail longer than the thief. Another thing genius, you're going to miss him! In most cases you're no more than 8' from your target and even then more than 80% of your shots miss their target. Even then, when you miss the first shot and he starts to run, youll probably be dumb enough to keep shooting. Just try to prove that the thief was STILL a THREAT to you while all you could see was his ---hole and elbows! They probably taught you all of this in your CHL class too....but you were sleeping, well, that or too busy thinking about the deer you spot-lighted the weekend before. Yes, Ive taken the class too. Its not all there is to know folks! ALL YOU CAN LEGALLY DO IS HOLD THEM UNTIL THE POLICE ARRIVE WITH THE LEAST AMOUNT OF FORCE NEEDED ! By oh means...don't believe me, fine...have it your way. Just don't come around here with a sob story begging for $$$ so that you can post bail! Have at it!
