hi I'd start over on Global Fly Fisher where there is a nice article on deer hair If its a Texas or southern deer it might not be as good for some patterns as deer down south simply do not get as thick or long a coat as their brethren up north where its so cold! But heck, don't let that stop you, there are lots of patterns that can be tied with deer hair. Its not as simple as whipping out a woolly bugger but the satisfaction is large when one develops the skill of stacking/spinning deer hair. There are patterns and tutorials both on Global Fly Fishers as well as over on FAOL Let us know how it goes.

I'll second rrhyne. The best haid for spinning is off those big northern deer--plus it is usually dyed into bright colors.
What it might be good for, is small muddler minnows in sizes 8-12. These are awesome on Texas streams by the way.

You can use tail for a bunch of stuff, including clousers.... btw, since we are on the topic... people that hunt, dont they take their catches to butchers to cut up? I wonder what most butchers do with the hair? May be a good source of hair. Sure wouldnt mind getting a hold of a few deer tails.
John 5:24 Very truly I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.
1Peter 3:18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit.
