me get started. I'm looking at a starter kit from Cabelas that costs about $170 and includes all tools, some material, and a book/video. Is this worth it?
How do you suggest I get started? I really just want to be able to tie the usual for nymphing the Guad and streamer fishing the Llano.
thanks!

Get in touch with the local Austin flyfishing club at http://www.austinflyfishers.com/ I'm sure there are lots of folks there that will be very happy to point you in the right direction. I wouldn't buy anything until you talked to them. Most of us who tie alot have gone overboard with equipment and supplies and have lots of stuff you can buy cheap!

I started about two years ago I suppose. I started off with the Dyna King Kingfisher vise kit. I think it is a very good vise for the money, and I would suggest finding the kit if you can. The kit includes Dr. Slick tools, a great instructional book, and some materials. Good luck, it is a fun, satisfying hobby.

The stuff Kirk has is quite a deal. The vise alone sells for $150 new.
Whatever you do, when selecting your vise, remember that purchase decision is one of the best examples of buying a quality product once so you don't have to shell out for **** repeatedly.

Wow, 170 bucks! That's a big investment considering you are essentially jumping off a cliff, and aren't sure even now whether or not you'll end up sticking with it!
I started tying flies less than two weeks ago. Now I'm tying most flies that I want to tie, including but not limited to: wooly buggers, simple dry flies for bluegill, streamers, clousers, crayfish imitations, frog imitations, deer hair poppers.
And I've done it with a simple $50 kit from Bass Pro Shops' White River fly shop for tying bass flies.
The vise isn't great, but if you adjust it, it WILL hold the hook all I care about for this moment, hell maybe even this year, as far as my tying goes. The materials included aren't great but they're not bad either. I went to a fly shop and bought some things to tie crayfish imitations which I (and the fish) love.
I'd make a small investment like, and if you don't end up liking tying flies, you can then feel glad that you didn't waste money.

Yes, and you will look at roadkill in a new way too!
John 5:24 Very truly I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.
1Peter 3:18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit.
