I'll be surf fishing big shell and jetties in port a this weekend. Any tips for catching a small shark with no kyak or anything to run baits out far? Are there smaller sharks close in? When we go to the jetties where should I fish? Any help would be very helpfull! I've never caught a shark.

Thanks,

Keith

Keith, if it was me, I would fish the end of the North Jetty. Cut bait works.

Get as big a reel as you got, get yourself a good shark leader and preferably a topshot of a heavy mono of about 20 foot. Go out to as far as you can on the jetties and cast the largest cutbait you can. Stingray work well as bait for sharks. So does Jackfish, skipjack, large mullet. I would also suggest a circle hook at least 12/0.

Here is a bad picture of a lot of my leaders.

The idea is simple. You have a hook on the end, about 1/3 the way up you have a swival, on the line above that you have a bead, a snap swival and another bead on the top 2/3's going to another swival. The last swival you tie onto your line, the snap swival you use a spider weight to hold your bait out there once you cast.

I would suggest stopping at Roy's bait and tackle on SPID if your comming thru Corpus for a good shark leader and surf weight.

The Top shot is nice for two reasons. First off say you have a 30# setup but you got a 3oz surf weight and 4oz of cutbait. You really can't get much levarage with 30# mono. So you tie on about 20 feet of 100# mono so that it can go around your reel some, now you can really heav your bait around and not snap the line as easy, the second win is say you get a shark, and it's not the baby you hope for but a 4 foot bullshark with a attitude, when you finally land the fish you will want that topshot warped around your reel a few times so you can thumb the spool and get some good leverage on the toothy so as not to get yourself bite.

Best of luck. Be safe!

If your going to Big Shell, keeping a line out will be difficult right now. There is a ton of grass on the beach and in the surf. However, there are some big trout and jackfish being caught on lures in areas that are fishable.
