Does anyone know of any good Volkswagen mechanics in the Denton or surrounding cities area? Need to do a 100k mile changing of the timing belt, water pump, seals, etc. I have gotten a couple quotes already close to $900 for all parts and labor with tax. It's on a 2002 Volkswagen Beetle 2.0L.

the people that quoted me already have quoted the parts at around $425. i found the whole kit online from several places for around $150! why do mechanics mark up the parts so much?

I have a VW Passat and share your woes. Mechanics automatically charge up the price on imports and the VW dealership close to me thinks their service is Godly($1450 quote on tuneup). I found the parts online for $235 and paid a mechanic 3 hours labor, a whole $1000 cheaper than the dealership.

Mechanic is family, dunno if its a normal thing for them. They might do it for you but wont guarantee the service because they can't trust everyone to order legit parts

You need to verify where they are getting the parts. Many shops do not have the recources to check every online retailer for the cheapest part. Also, they will use a place that is able to give you a warranty on the parts that they supply. Some shops only use dealer parts. Check out www.bevilautomotive.com call & talk to Tracy or Craig & tell them that Dave Blankenship sent you. He's not close, but he is honest.

There is a guy up north of the Colony that specializes in VW diesels. He changed my neighbors timing belt about 4 months ago. I can get his name if you'd like to see if he'd do your stuff.
Also, lite-liner, AKA Brian could do it. He did my daughters Honda CRV a year or so ago. He's got an ad in the Traders area.

i asked the independent mechanic in denton who he gets his parts from and he said mainly WorldPac and Lewisville Volkswagen. go figure. im going to call the VW shop and asks them how much the kit is.
my dad is a pretty good mechanic and he has a huge shop with a hydraulic car lift so we thinks we might try and do it ourselves. he's pretty savvy under a hood. i'm gonna take it to his shop tomorrow and see if he thinks he can do it. if he thinks he can, i'm just going to order the timing belt kit online and install it ourselves.
if we get into it and find out we can't do it, i will definitely holler at yall to see if yall know of any mechanics that would install the kit that i buy online.

i have seen parts marked up 200% in dealers... the service department pays the light bills, employees, etc. the sales off cars pays the owners. at least thats what I was told several years ago at Frank Parra before Sonic owned it.

i bet they mark up the parts more than that. the kit i found online has to be marked up at least 30%. so that would mean that independent guy is marking up his parts like over 300% depending on where he gets them from. ridiculous.

Ever since I bought the Passat, I found all my parts online or at ORielys. The guys at ORielys helped me out with minor stuff and my girls uncle has helped me with the major stuff. Get with someone who can fix your car and show you what their doing. You can really eff up a VW just winging it

Before you tear it apart, check to see if there are any required tools. Many of the VW use camshaft holding tools. If you get it apart & then determine that you need them, it's too late.

Dave, thanks a lot! I talked to Craig and he quoted me $400 under what the other shops quoted! He said even if its a little more difficult, $900 is just way overpriced. I might just take it to them b/c they know what they are doing. Appreciate the referral man!
