I will be there mid August to do some surf fishing and some wading. I know there is no beach in sea drift but what is the closest beach access for some surf fishing? I know it's alot to ask but would also appreciate info on good spots to wadefish the bay. We got a free place to stay at a buddy place only drawback is no running water but there is AC.

To do some surf fishing you will need a boat to get to the gulf and it may be more economical for you to trailer your boat to Port O'Connor and put in there rather than Seadrift, Swan Point or Charlies. The big jetties are 4 miles from Port O'connor. They were catching spanish mackeral and nice trout early on the north side of the north jetty (Matagorda ship channel jetties) yesterday and today.

Thanks for the good information. Unfortuneatly we will not be bringing a boat with us so we will be restricted in that respect. I am looking for some beaches close by we can drive to to fish in the surf. I have never been to sea drift-usually go to port aransas but cant turn down free accomadations.

If you want to fish in the surf from Seadrift you WILL need a boat to get out to Matagorda Island. There is NO surf at Seadrift.
Snowflakes and entitled brats will be the doom of America!

There are no beaches in Seadrift or PO.But there are a few places to wade fish.In Seadrift one can wade what the locals call''the beachfront'' which is the shoreline along the bay front in town. You can also drive over to Swan Point, outside Seadrift and fish the banks there. In PO,follow the road through town and you will end up dead ended at the bay.All of this is good wadefishing. There is a small jetty separating the barge canal and the bay that has good fishing at times. There are some more places to wade north of the above mentioned.Get yourself a map at one of the local stores.Good luck..

IF I talk my buddy into taking his 12 foot boat how far is the boat ride to matagorda island? Otherwise what is the closest beach to drive to?

You shouldn't venture into that bay with a 12fter. It can be a dangerous ride across that bay to Matagorda. I'm cautious with my 19ft Kenner.
Check into Indianola beach that is on Lavaca bay. My neighbor went there and he had good luck off a lighted pier and you could wade fish there too. Its a long beach with several access places. There is also access to Powderhorn Lake that is more protected.
I see that you are in Kyle, Indianola is about the same distance as Seadrift.
It is a shame how difficult it is to fish w/o a boat.
Have fun stay safe. Let us know how you did.

Everything stated is true, no direct gulf access from Seadrift. And being land locked isn't helping much either...
The city maintains a little area that's lit, it's just around the shrimp boats. Your best shot for boat free catching. Also some lighted areas at the second harbor marina.
You could take your buds boat and fish the protected water just inside from the swan point landing, or go up the road a bit and put in at charlies and scootch aross into shoalwater bay, but that's about it.
Great fishing, but hard without a proper vessel.

If your set on wading surf than the closest surf would be going east to Matagorda beach or going south to Port Aransas.

Thanks to all. If we can get the tires replaced on buddys trailer we will take it and stay in the calmer, smaller waters (weather permitting). We will be staying a few blocks from the bayfront on Broadway Ave. We are relative amateurs when it comes to fishing the bay but I have been out with my dad several times before he got rid of his bay boat out in Matagorda bay. One thing I know is to find the shell bottom and fish live shrimp and croakers. Hopefully we will be able to catch some bait. I will post report.

Take some white Gulps with you. I found that they work better than live bait sometime. very odd smell, but they work.

On those gulps do you fish them with a cork just like live shrimp? I'm willing to give them a try on this next trip. And Edude I agree that Jarrod can cover the cost of those.

I have fished them under a Cajun Thunder[rattle cork] with a 1/8 oz. lead head and also thrown them like any soft plastic.

As said earlier, please be careful on a 12' boat on the bay. Wear your life jackets!
