July 23rd Report

My dad and I had another great day at Lake Fork yesterday. The Lake is about 5ft low with temperatures exceeding the 100 degree mark. The light breeze kept us cool enough to continue fishing throughout the late morning hours. We launched our kayaks and began fishing near the ramp. Bass were chasing bait fish in the shallows and by this time we got the creek figured out. I started the morning using a Yum wooly bully in watermelon red and dad was casting a bone colored zara spook. We caught 7 bass around the ramp with the largest weighing 4.1lbs. I lost a nice bass on a yellow magic popper as I was reeling the fish in.

After one hour we paddled up the creek to the main lake where my dad noticed a bass blowing up off a main lake point. His first cast across the point the fish slapped the spook out of the water and on his second cast he hooked it. We brought the bass to the shore and it measured 20 inches and weighed 4.2lbs. A group of three guys in a skeeter were fishing our spot where we caught schooling LMB last weekend. They were catching bass left and right. We resorted to plan B where I marked sandbass and yellow bass on a main lake point in 15-17ft of water. We fished for sandbass for 2 hours without catching a LMB. The guys in the skeeter began to fish our tree line working their way to us. They watched us catch sandbass after sandbass and trolled right up on us. They tried to take over our spot and we said the heck with this let go catch some bass! We paddled along the tree line casting worms and jigs with no luck. After taking a break on the shore we went back to the tree line with a changeup of lures.

Dad tied on a phoenix vibrating jig with a 4.5in Lake Fork Tackle magic shad trailer and I switched to a Strike King Thumper worm 10 inch. We began fishing our tree line in one of our productive spots. My dad made a long cast into the tree line and began yo-yoing his chatterbait in 19ft of water. He felt a tap-tap set the hook and thought he was stuck. By this time the skeeter boys had rolled right on top of us. After a couple of seconds the log started moving and so did the kayak. Dad made a second hook set with a thunderous roar. The skeeter boys heads turned in excitement. I look over and the fight began. The tip of his carbonlite heavy action 7ft rod was bent clear in the water. He brought the fish up weighing 7.1lbs and measuring 23 inches. The skeeter boys congratulated us and drove off in to the abyss.

After catching the big bass we went back to sandbass fishing. Dad caught a double, yellow bass and sandbass, on a redeye shad. Later in the day I landed a 4.5lb lmb jigging a redeye shad in 15ft of water off the bottom.

We ended the day with 14 LMB and we lost count on the number of yellow bass and sandbass.

Dont make fun of my farmers tan! I got one heck of sunburn saturday, stupid me, Im going to school to become a doctorI should know better.
