I read an interesting article in the July 2011 issue of Bassmaster regarding the drop in tourism and fishing on both Lakes Falcon and Amistad. Article was title “Scared to Fish” by James Hall.

The article started by mentioning a shooting that occurred on September 30, 2010 in which a husband and wife were joyriding on a jet ski on Falcon and they accidently came across members of a drug cartel preparing to smuggle drugs across boarder. The husband was killed. Since news of that incident reached to national levels, tourism on both lakes has declined.

So here is my question. With the current conditions on the Mexican side of the boarder, would you fish either of these lakes? We all know how good the bass fishing is there but is worth the risk?

I don’t care how you feel about jet skis, just whether or not you would fish these lakes right now.

I've had two friends go to Falcon in the past 2 months twice each and they have both told me they see nearly as many patrol boats now as bass boats on the lake and they feel extremely safe, more than ever. Efforts have stepped up to help bring the sportman back and the fish are really hungry!

I think its safe. If your in doubt stay on the Texas side. There is more water on that side than you can possibly cover. I've been told there is more to the story with the jet skiers than came out in the news.

I would be more concerned with the meth-heads in East Texas than those 2 lakes. Just stay on the American side if you are worried.

Since 1957 (as far as I've been able to determine) there has been a total of one boater shot at Falcon. The lake is well over 30 miles long with all of the unfortunate incidents (3 that I am aware of) occuring within approximatly 3 miles or so in the same area of the lake. The last incident happened over a year ago.

IF you're worried about Falcon, I would stay away from the Riverwalk here in San Antonio too.

Falcon. I've even fished the Veleno at night.... no problems ever. I've fished all over the American side and the Mexican side. Including the way back of the Salado this January. No problems. Felt completely safe.

Fishing continues to be exceptional on Falcon, With Amistad getting better. Falcon would be the better choice. Plenty of SAFE water to fish on American Side. Good luck had reports in the last week of a 51+lb. stringer 5 fish one day in the last few weeks.

I'd take Falcon. I've fished Amistad and Falcon is next on the list.

I'll be at Falcon this Monday and Tuesday. I haven't fished Amistad, but Falcon is just sick right now.

I get 25 days off each year (not counting weekends) so get to go to both lakes each year. I love the scenic beauty of Amistad which is also a couple of hours closer to home, however, this year I will spend a total of 14 days on Facon and just 3 days on Amistad. The fishing is just to good on Falcon this year. Spent a week there in Feb by myself and stayed in US waters. Felt safe knowing I could tune-up to 79 mph if needed in my new Legend below.
