I will be heading down to Sabine this weekend with a couple of friends from work. I just need to know how's the weather? Did Sabine get a lot of fresh water? I will be fishing the Jetty's so any info on what the fishing has been like this week will be great also. I have two friends who have never fished saltwater and I hope to put them on some big reds.

Thanks in advance

to my knowledge, all jetty access is shut down...everything is in dissaray from the hurricane. not much freshwater i don't think, but enough of a storm surge that a barge came out of the intercoastal canal and made it's way to some folks' front yard. there are partially sunk and fully sunk boats all over through there now...a tugboat, a shrimp boat and part of a casino boat (all from louisiana) wound up by stewt's island in sabine lake. it's prolly not the best place to fish right now. they may have opened up the jetties again, but don't quote me either way on that

Thanks for the info Saltwater Guy but I have been to the jetty several times since the storm. I saw the bardge you are speaking of and all the shrimp boats. So to anyone else who reads this post you can still access the jetty and Sabine Pass. You can only put your boat in at the Umphrey pier. All boat ramps in Sabine are closed including the state park.

Thanks for the info I will look for you. I will be in a Sea Chaser CC with a 90 Yamy on the back. We will be leaving Dallas around 4:00pm today. We plan to fish tonight if we get in early enough.

We made it back Sunday around 2:00PM. We had a great trip. Everybody caught fish. All fish caught on fresh dead shrimp. Cast to the rock and bounce back slowly. Total for two days and four fishermen.
40 black drum
10 sheephead
6 red fish
4 sharks caught on cut mullet at the end of the jettys.

Glad to hear you had a good time. Where did you buy bait on Sabine? Rita took care of all the bait shops I went to last year.

I was fishing the north end of the lake last weekend using artificials trying to work the birds and the mouths of the bayous. We actually saw a lot of bait fish / shrimp trying to escape the feeding frenzy going on under them. Unfortunatly the majority of the fish were pretty small with only a handful of keepers. All and all it was a good trip catching fish is always fun.

This upcoming weekend I thought I would give the jetties a try for the first time this year. Your report is giving me a little bit of hope. I have some friends coming in town from Houston I don't think they are the biggest fishermen in the world, buddy and his girlfriend =( . I know this could be a huge mistake, so finding fish quick is a must.

Fresh bait and light line is the key to catching fish at the jettys. I hardly ever have a bad trip. I hope I don't jinks myself. Two places to find fresh bait. One is just like you are going to sabine pass go over the bridge an look to your left you will see the a white truck and a big sign that says shrimp it is well before you cross the Keith lake bridge so if you get to keith lake bridge you have past it up. Some times she has the old bait out to sell first but she alway has some fresh bait in another cooler in the truck just tell you want some fresh bait. Second I don't know the name of the Hwy but I think it is twin city. Go like you are going to Nederland. Another white truck on your left. She always has fresh bait. She was on vacation last weekend so I would get my bait the day before. Also both don't open until 7:00am.Good luck

There's a couple of places you can get fresh shrimp in Port Arthur. I usually get mine at Marie's off of Memorial Blvd and Gulfway. They're the same people that Regg was referring off of Twin City Hwy. Another place is Kim's off of Gulfway and close to the refinery towards Sabine Pass. Good fising.

Can you walk out on the jetties in Sabine Pass and fish like you could at other jetties? Or do you need a boat?

Me and my buddy & 2 other guys launched at Dick Dowlen Park & ran to the riggs and limited out on Red Snapper in a hour and a half. And all the rigs are still there.
