Don't know if anyone has been keeping track of this or not. Cedar Bayou (the natural cut into the Gulf that used to feed the rockport area) was closed many years ago by man do to an oil spill in Mexico. The results of this have been devestating to the coastal ecosystem in that area due to the fact that it was never restored back to its natural state. Throughout the years the corps of engineers made several half hearted attempts at dredging a shallow channel through cedar bayou. But because it was never restored back to its natural state (have to open vinson slough along w/cedar bayou channel to get a hydraulic pump effect) it always just silted back in. After 14 years of fighting by several very very dedicated people, it looks like the pass (including vinson slough) may be opened by next summer. The permit has been released and the funding is well on its way. WHOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
Man up. Fight the GOOD fight.

When this happens it will be largely due to the efforts of a few dedicated sportsmen. My thanks and appreciation go out to them.

That is good news.
I have long been an advocate of keeping open this pass that was Legislatively designated by Texas as a natural fish pass.
My grandmother and grandpa used to chase schools of tarpon from Cedar Bayou to Copano Bay back in the 1920's.
When Cedar Bayou was opened back up in 1995, the fishing from Mesquite Bay to Copano Bay was enhanced by schools of surf trout roaming this back bay. Some schools had trout that ran through Copano Bay back then that were all around 26".
Over in St. Charles Bay, crabs used to line the bank by the Big Tree, literally, by the hundreds.
When Cedar Bayou is re-opened the marine life, estuary's and back bay's will all be enhanced by being closer to it's natural state of well being when water, bait and game fish flowed freely through the pass.

In the words of Alton Voigt of Tackle Town, one of the men sputterfuss is refering to, I remain cautiously optimistic. I hope it gets done quickly as the benifits will be huge.
Keep a tight line!

I'd have to say I'm cautiosly optimistic myself... at best. Couple of reasons, most importantly it must be done correctly. As stated in the original post, it's been done improperly before. Insanity- to do the same thing repeatedly, expecting to get a different result.

That is good news! Where is the funding coming from? Is the state doing it? Cedar Bayou historically has been open and closed naturally as well as by man. A good hurricane would open her up!

As far as I know, the permit is signed and released. The project is going to cost millions. Some of the big funding is still being sought out through various grants and such. Donations are being taken. You can keep a more accurate track on all of this by googleing "save cedar bayou". This will direct you to a forum that gives all of the up to date answers.
Man up. Fight the GOOD fight.

Any angler who loves fishing here in the Rockport Bay system can make a contribution.
In fact, the fist contribution to this particular fund was $100.00 by a local Rockport resident to get it started.
Here is the scoop:County Judge Mills said anyone wishing to donate personally to the Cedar Bayou project may do so by submitting a check to Aransas County, with Cedar Bayou project written in the memo. The county has already set a separate line item in the budget for such donations.
He said that line item will remain in the budget because there will be a need for future maintenance of the Bayou once it is dredged.Mailing Address:

Thanks for the heads up Trout Scout.
I will be getting my checkbook out and making a contribution.
Hopefully others will do the same.

UPDATE: http://www.aransascountytx.gov/main/...ices.php#oinfo Go to the bottom of the page and check out the 2 request for studies. I have confirmed with Judge Mills that the pass WILL NOT be opened until these studies are complete (they take, at minimum 10 months). If they were started now it would carry over into whooping crane season and the pass would in turn be opened in APRIL 2014. Both studies seem like typical BS to delay a project like this. My question is how the heck do you overlook something like this??? a fish study...What the hay is a piping plover?
Man up. Fight the GOOD fight.

That's sad. I've had some great fishing days there when the pass is open. The pass been closed sure has hurt the bay fishing around there.

Better fishing now is in the back bays since Cedar bayou has been closed.
... they haven't shrimped back in Copano Bay since 2003.
.... plenty of bait and fish back there year round !
