Fished last weekend in Port O for the first time. I caught 6 reds around 17" Sunday morning on shrimp under a popping cork over oyster reefs. Later we hit the wells in Espiritu bay catching 2 keeper specs and a few sheepshead, all on shrimp. Monday was the funnest day by far. Got up early an went out to the jetties. We immediately saw birds diving and fish hitting on top. I thew out a topwater and right away it got smacked. Never got to see what it was because before I knew it, it had ripped all the line off my rod and then snapped the line. This happened one more time to me and and once to my dad. Even though we didn't bring them in it was still awesome!
We are planning another trip down to Port O in early October with heavier rods and line, in hopes to catch some bull reds. Will the bull reds be running through there in early October? Whats the best baits to use for them? We are bringing some family members who have never caught anything over 12" and we would like to put them on some bigger fish.

fisherkid: Those were probably jack crevalle (or jack fish) that you hooked and broke off. They typically run about 20 pounds and can be a lot of fun on heavier tackle that you need to land them.

We just got back from Port O on Sunday evening. Caught lots of reds up to about 27". Ended up keeping about 15 between the three of us for 2 1/2 days of fishing. Came home with about 20 trout as well. Biggest was 22.5". Wade fished the flats using cocahoes and assassins on 12 lb. test line. Most fish were caught off the bank a little ways in 3-4'. Not much feeding action up close to shore. FYI - http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/huntwild/wild/species/reddrum/
