I was at PA this last week on vacation and we went fishing a few times and went swimming a lot. I got my Texas Game and Fish magazine after I got back and there was an article in there about shark fishing from the shore. They get some pretty big bulls and tigers from the beach. Just makes me wonder how many of them we were swimming with when we went swimming? We were out there pretty far. I would say 200-300 yards. We were past the second bar and could see the green water near by. How dangerous is it to swim out there? There was bait everywhere. The mullet were thick and pretty big. I got several over 14 inches in the cast net.

After reading that article I just have to wonder if I need to stick with the pool next time?

Thoughts?

Two years ago i was fishing Horace caldwell id Port A, for trout(under the second light 2-3 feet deep). I went to the other side of the pier to make a cast and my wife screams #$%& look at that. She was scared out of her mind. A 5-6 foot shark had swam by in 2-3 feet of water. So there is plenty of big sharks out there. The pool is much better to swim in but kids love the ocean.

If you read the article, TJ Pilgrim catches those fish every weekend. High Island is where he fishes and High Island tends to have the sharks farther from shore. On the rest of the coast the sharks are in even closer. The very dangerous time is dawn and dusk but the sharks can be there all day. I'd be very careful even though shark attacks are very rare all it takes is once.

If you see baitfish working, it's time to head another direction. Shark attacks are usually a mistake on the sharks part.

They are fun to catch though.

The solution to any problem - work, love, money, whatever - is to go fishing, and the worse the problem, the longer the trip should be. --John Gierach

As soon as your in the water you become part of the food chain. Like JP said they usualy bite humans by mistake. When I was younger and bolder I would venture out. Since then, an 8ft bull shark came real close to me in the wade gut at Corpus. Now, when I want to reach out further, I use a 12 foot Breakaway rod.

Here is one of three sharks we caught Memorial weekend on PINS. This one came out of the first gut.

Is there a "smart" way to react to a shark lurking in your area? When i lived in Georgia the locals said to run in a ZIGZAG when an alagator attacks you. I am assuming that you should just say still with shark in the water. Also, how often do sharks go into the bays in port A?

I was fishing at SLP last Monday and we were catching sharks to 5.5ft all morning. I had a shark spool 600yds of powerpro off my torium 30. Now I am spooling up with 875yds of 50lb. We were using Ladyfish caught on YoZuris.

They don't call me Lucky for nothin'...

Sharks investigate any disturbance in the water for a potential meal (wounded fish etc). Humans, by nature, are completely out of our element in the water. A person swimming is reason enough for a shark to investigate. Remaining still might do some good but the chances that you'll actually see a shark before it has "checked you out" are ZERO. Luckily, they'd rather munch on fish
