I will be going down to Port A next weekend and need some advice. The house where I will be staying is on a canal near mustang beach (see link below for a topo map). I have never fished this part of Port A and would like to know if the fishing is any good around there. Particularly, the East Flats, Coyote Island, and Pelone Island area. Thanks for the help! http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=27.8...amp;layer=DRG25

All I know about that area is the Piers and surf have good fishing but the flats "looked" good for fishing. If you have a boat or Kayak you could try the water between the Bob Hall Pier and the Oil platform directly in front of it for Snapper, etc. You could also try the jettie on the North side of Horace Caldwell Pier.

I have fished East flats a lot. Normally fish the area north of Pelone Island. Quite a few reds and some trout mixed in. Fish the pothoes and channels.
I throw a Super Spook jr in bone over those potholes. A gold Johnson Spoon works good, too. Try the Texas Trout Killer II jr's in liquid shrimp color on a 1/8oz jighead.
Most all of the flats behind Mustang Island hold good fish.
On the flats themselves, fish the potholes. Near the islands I would look for hard sand/grass mix. Fish the deeper grasslines later in the day and look for bait fish. On a high tide look for the fish to be tight to the shoreline or shallow water in the potholes. Outgoing tide or low tide, look for them in the channels and drop offs.
Good luck and let us know how you do.

Ended up fishing Estes Flats and California Hole on Saturday morning. Motor problems limited the fishing the rest of the weekend. Oh well. Ended up with 5 reds (1 keeper...24inches) and some undersized trout. All in all it was pretty good considering the little time that I actually fished. All fish were caught on a pearl/pearl white Redfish Magic spinner bait.
