Hey all you old salts, I'm heading to SPI the first week of June. I am taking a guide bay fishing that Tuesday and will pick his brain but I want to be prepared. I can't sunbathe any more (small problem with Melanoma, caught it early, cured thanks GOD!!!) anyway, I will go nuts sitting around the condo with three other families, kidos etc. you know what I mean! Back to my questions. I'm not much of a jetty walker but will fish them. I will also venture out in the surf with the sea monsters and will shuffle the bay with the rays. Where should I wade fish and what rigs, baits etc. will I need? It's been a while since I have fished SPI, we have been going to Table Rock Lake near Branson Mo. I can give great tips on catching spots there. Give me some replies, I'm heading to Cabellas in the next week and need some HOT tips.. THANKS!!!

Definitely a Johnson gold spoon. I would also take a good topwater bait and probably a couple bags of bass assasins in tequila and/or plum. The reds usually will hit all of those. A lot of times you can get trout to hit a popping cork with shrimp underneath or a white cochaho minnorw. If you are staying on the island you could drive to the Texas side and wade fish out in front of Laguna Vista. I've had some luck there before. Nice thing about coast fishing is you don't have to take a whole lot of lures and trade out colors all of the time like we do bass fishing.

Thanks PM spinnerb8, I will get a map and check out Laguna Vista, amen on the bass fishing, I have enough stuff to start my own tackle shop. I am an "all day sucker". If it's new and I see it on TV, I will shop till I find it and then never fish it. My latest ones are the new frog baits and the Chatterbox. Thanks again for the reply and good fishin!!!

Hey PMspinnerb8,
I plan on giving Laguna Vista and Holly Beach a try in July when I'm down there. I was reading the fishing report today and it said the fishing was good at Holly Beach which is right by Laguna Vista. It said the fish were hitting top water lures. Do you know what kind of lures typically are considered good for reds and trout?

I've fished Holly Beach also and caught some trout there.I haven't been down in a while so I don't know exactly what they are hitting, but as far as topwaters go I like the Storm Chug bugs in green mullet or mullet. Rebel Skitter pops will do well also. Just work them fast and hard. When in doubt though I keep going back to the gold spoon.
