hey saltys, dallas boy with little coastal experience that has plugged away at it on a couple of previous trips found san luis pass this weekend. i followed directions i recieved here and found the turn-off before the toll bridge. pulled in just as a guide was leaving. he gave me some directions of his own and i was soon catching flounder, sand trout, speckled trout, croakers and one (my first) redfish. wade-fished all afternoon using pearl sassy shad bottom-bounced, burning, jerky and steady retrieves. all produced. had a great mixed bag of action and some great flounder and speck filets for my dining pleasure. thanks for y'alls directions and thank GOD for the great timing in meeting a guide on the beaten path. i will enjoy that great stretch of water for as long as access to it will let me. yesterday was a great day. Congradulations on your catch!! There's nothing better then going out blind and having such a great day (guide or not). I love that area and am very jealous. I hope to get down there before the big run is over, but it's not looking promising. Catch a few for me!!

a good friend will bail you out of jail... a great friend will be sitting next to you saying "dang that was fun!!!"

Was he in a white pickup with his guide service name on the back window? I'm guessing you fished Mon afternoon. He sent you down the grassline, right? I was the guy about 150yds. from you in the white shirt and green waders. I saw you get into the fish thick in one spot. If you are the same person. How about all the shrimp in there?

Guys thanks for the info on San Luis. I have several hours to kill on Sat. after dropping my wife off at the Houston Quilt Show. I think I will bring my rod and try some wading in that area. Are artificials ok to use instead of bait. It would be a lot less hassle. Do I need waders or can I use shorts and wading shoes? Thanks for any info you can provide.

hey Fisherman Ed, i used pearl sassy shad 2" on about an 1/8th oz. jighead. the guide told me to use bass assasins. i didn't have any but will next time. go small. texas rigged shrimp bottom-bounced should work too i'd think. waders would be a good idea cuz they offer a little more protection than a bare leg if you happen to step on a stingray. just watch where you step and be aware and you should be a-okay. i hope your few hours spent there will be as grand as my time was. you'll most likely catch a mixed bag of flounder, specks, sand trout, croakers and redfish. i wish you lots of luck and post your results when you get back. got back in there yesterday. Most of the shrimp have moved out with the front, and the water level was about a foot lower. No sand trout. I only managed 4 flounder and one speck. Had another dozen hits but they weren't feeding very hard. Was on the water from noon to 2:30. Tides was going out and never switched around like it was supposed to. Next 4 tide day should get their jaws working again. I'll probably fish the day after Thanksgiving, I did last year and didn't do so hot, 2hours 2 fish 18" and a 22" flounder. Might fish on Wed. before if the weather cooperates. I'll be back out there next week and the following. Then its on to my topwater spots.

GOFISH,

Thanks a lot for the information. I've got some of those sassy shads that you mention. I also have some DOA shrimps. They might work also. I'll bring my waders. Is the turnoff on the right hand or left hand side of the road before you get to the toll bridge? If I get close to the place I will probably see other wading fishermen I suppose. I've never been to that spot, in fact I've never been to that pass that I can remember. Thanks again.

Deacon - topwater spot? if it's not too much of a secret, throw me a bone.

Fisherman Ed - the turn-off is on the right-hand side. you can see the toll bridge just ahead about a quarter mile. when you turn right, go straight for a couple hundred feet and the pass will appear straight ahead. the access is right there. you can enter the water just feet from where you park. i hope you tear'em up. Thanks a lot!! I am looking forward to giving it a try. It's a great way to kill some time while I wait for my wife in Houston. I'll let you know how I do.

I'd love to, but it has taken me the last 3-4 years to figure out this cove. It produced fish from March to end of July. The last two months gave up 24-26" fish every trip(every weekend, all but 1 released) all on top water. I watch others in the cove catch very little. Don't let people tell you they are only for early morning. Between 8:30 and 9:30 was the best time for the larger fish even in the heat of the summer. Aug. shut the bite down. And recently(wind permitting I've been after flounder(for the freezer), and not in my topwater spots. Might hit one Sun. morn. early then head for the flounder. Every cove has these spots you just have to know how to read them. I'll walk in circles until the bite starts, it's all about confidence in the spot. If you want me to elaborate let me know.
