Cokes were a nickle, in a six oz. bottle.
Gas was 19.9 cents a gallon.
Unleaded gas was for your lantern.
There were gas stations that would fix flats for a dollar, pump your gas, check your oil and clean your windshield for free.
Nobody locked their houses or cars.
The Manor man.
The milk man would just go in your house and leave the milk in the fridge or ice box, same for the Ice man.
Who was???
Daddy Ringtail?
Mugwomp?
Whatever happened to Lorenzo Jones's wife Belle?
How come the streets are always clean in western movies with all those horses standing around?
Heat is getting to me. Come on Fall.

Hooking a fish is like playing string with a cat. The exact size, shape, color of string matters less than how you wiggle it- and little cats are easier to fool than big ones. John Gierach

Can't go back that far, but I can still remember gas was $.65/gal when I came to America. How sweet it was!!! I was born by the equator, but by no mean I like the hot climate. Rather fish in the winter at 40degree than anything near 100degree or over. This heat is horrific and unbearable. But I think because I don't fish but once every 5wks or so... Know how you feel though Ernest!

Well I know I saw lower prices on gas than it was when I was driving, but the thing that sticks in my head is still late 1960's and you could go to a gas station in town and get gas for .25 cents a gallon and Cigarettes were the same price at .25 per pack, of course cheaper by the carton.
Also remember before that when in some towns they would get into gas price wars and no telling how cheap you would find it. Pretty sure it got less that the 19.9 your speaking of.
Also remember before there was an IH 10 and to cross Texas and Louisiana it was just old Hwy 90.
Things I miss....old style Chicken Fried Stake that you hardly ever find now. Since I lived on a farm for my first 6 years and only moved to town for school we hardly ever had canned Veggies and were fresh out of the garden. So much better like that too. Can still remember pulling carrots out of the garden fresh and great along with the Melons. I also had something like 10 horses by the time I was 10 years old. Learned to drive mostly on that farm driving the old Willis Jeep and the Tractor.
The 1950's were the best with them unlocked doors and no worry that some freak would come do what happens now.
Oh I need get back out of the 50's and 60's before I get peeved.

Just stepped out to get a battery for my office phone and it was 105!!! Fished last night and it was too hot for man and beast. Going to be on big TEX at day break for a 1/2 day if we can stand it. As a kid I can remember $.24 per gal. $2.00 would get you a 1/2 tank.

Anthony, We found fish but, was it hot... Caught about 15 or so and returned them to the hot water tank... Some were good tourney fish...
Getting back to the main subject... I remember gas wars as low as .17 a gallon.. It would cost me about $2.55 to fill my tank and that would last 2 weeks.. (about 15 gallons).. Good old 59 Chevy Impala 2 door hard top... That's when cars were made of steel... McDonalds hamburgers .10 cheeseburgers.15.. Worked for a furniture company and got $3.00 a day for unloading furniture at the warehouse... I would often go to the store for my Mom and get a loaf of bread, 1/2 gallon of milk, and a pack of cigarettes and have enough left for some 2 for a penny candy.... I was wondering what Ernest was mumbling about while fishing , now I know.. He was worried about the horse thing....

When I was a kid I could take a quarter to the store pulling my lawnmower on my bike. Get a gallon of gas and 6 pieces of penny candy or double bubble gum. Gas was .19 a gallon. I'd mow 4-5 yards and get .50 a yard. Good profit.

I remember griping during my Army days in the early 70's when my nearest gas station in Killeen raised its prices from 23 cents a gallon for good.
I worked all week in a 120+ degree machine shop this week. I rode 12+ miles home from work on my bicycle every day this week in the 105 degree heat. So I'm thinking I'm not going to be that hot standing on the deck of my boat tomorrow.
Ernest would be proud of me, though. I did add an umbrella to the boat. I may just make the short drive to Benbrook tomorrow. You ready to go fishing, Pat?
