I will be going to Galveston this weekend (Mar.4), camping in the Galveston SP. I have not been able to find any fishing reports for this specific area. Does anyone know is the fishing any good in this area? What can I expect to catch? I am bringing some light spinning reels for catching bait as well as some heavier surf rods and a kayak to drop some bigger baits in deeper water. Any help or comments are much appreciated.

Its getting better everyday. Hope for warm days till then, and you might see some trout. What do you want to catch? For bigger fish, you should expect mainly reds and black drum, and possibly a shark if the water gets warm enough. For reds and drum, use at least 200# mono leader, about 4'-5' long with a spider weight. I use 6oz weights, unless its really windy then go bigger. You could go lighter than 6oz, but I dont see the point, as I like to have as tight of line as possible, and the fish won't feel the weight anyway. Just buy one of the big mono leaders at bait shops or piers if you don't have the supplies to build one, and you can get wieghts there too. Hmmm...trying to think of what else you need to know.

Thanks for the advice pier rat. I will be out there saturday and sunday. I will post here and let you know how I did. I would like to catch a bigger fish (red fish, drum or shark), but I will be happy to catch whatever is biting. Mostly having fished in fresh water all my life my biggest fish to date are an 8.2 lb bass and a 10lb catfish.

Pier Rat,
I caught the 8.2# bass at Ray Roberts. I love that lake, lots of cover to fish. Now for the report.

Not much happening in the surf in Galveston. Did not see any bait fish working. We arrived Saturday around noon and tried in the surf for about an hour, the wind was howling. It was tough fishing, so we switched tactics and headed for the bay side of the State Park.

Caught a Red, Sheepshead, Whiting and Stingray all on live shrimp wade fishing. Kept the whiting and used him for cut bait later that night at the pier.

Fished from the galveston pier on Sat. night caught all the hard heads we wanted using cut bait.

Sunday morning did not catch anything. We fished from some of the Jettys in town.

Everything considered, we had a great trip. We found the State Park campgrounds to be very clean and enjoyed staying there. We spoke to a few fisherman that said it might still be a little early for the fish to really start biting both in the surf and in the bay, but that it could happen any day now.
