Something caught my eye on the gravel road the other day. Looking back, I am shocked I even saw this. Smallest one I have ever seen...  Sorry snake lovers. I don't let the poisonous ones live...

I caught a spreading adder on the river a month ago. It is pretty cool how they play dead and will show their belly. When you flip them, they immediately roll back over.
They act tough until threatened then just play dead.

Oh well ... I don't think it is a hog nose snake either.
Dead snake. Kinda like bugs they just keep coming.

Very little about this snakes looks like a copperhead. It looks just like a Heterodon in every aspect. It would also have a bright yellow/sulfur colored tail if it were an Agkistrodon.
A dead give away you may have noticed would be the upturned rostrum. Take another look.

You have two species of Heterodon in your county, platirhinos and nasicus. Coloration is different for each and variable in each as well. You may accustomed to seeing H. nasicus.

Looks like Pope is right on this deal... I admit my ignorance.
All of the spreading adders I have handled or encountered were "nasicus".
This pic is a DEAD ringer for the "platirhinos" species.
Probably didn't notice his hog nose because he was so small.
Color patter is similar but not exact to most copperheads in my area though.

You gotta admit, it's not too bad losing to someone that gives you the latin name for the species... I was outgunned when the latin came out. Plus he called me out for saying poisonous as opposed to correctly saying "non-venomous". I shouldn't have slept through Herpetology class I guess. Just a guy fortunate enough to live way out in the country and experience a lot of God's creatures.

Good stuff Pope! I'll add that young copperheads have yellow tails, same as cottonmouths.
Color pattern is usually not a reliable way to ID a snake. Triangular head, elongated pupil, and the "pit" between the eye and nostril are the sings of a venomous snake(coral snakes don't have pits). Now you can decide what caliber weapon you're going to blast it with, or in this case a boot heel.
