It has been my experience that it is excellent, the past few years I have gone to Rockport to fish over spring break when I was in college, well last year I was out and still went, this year I am going again in the middle of March. the reds are running good, fish live shrimp, some trout in the area, have caught Sheepheads and Black Drum also. All just outside of Traylor Island. The tempature is prefect, not to hot not to cold. I my opinion, March is the second best month to be down there, first being October. If you like, I can update you as to my luck after I get back in March before you go.
Keep a tight line!

I'll be down March 11th and 12th.
I'll give you a report when we get back. Plenty of Sheepshead and Reds (both bulls and slots).

I will be down with a couple of my buddies 9-12th. Hoping to haul in a couple of trophy trout and introduce them to our filet knives. Man I love fresh caught fried trout. Anhow March should produce some good trout and sheepshead. And of course redfish (year round).

Yes, please update me when each of you get back from your fishing trip. Thanks! Also I hear the sandtrout are spawning around that time and you can catch some big females. Does anyone know if this is true or not?

Late March early April will be the best time of year for big trout on topwaters. Fish early. 2-3 days prior to new or full moon is best. Probably my favorite time of year.
Reds should be fairly easy as well. Watch the water temp.

Went to Corpus on the 10th and the 11th with a friend and caught a bunch of sandtrout from the causeway pier. I'd say we found eggs in more than half em while cleaning em up.
Life is a beach, i'm just playing in the sand.

Ditto....sandies all do have eggs now and will spawn mostly in March/April. Anyway, both the gulf and southern kingfish will have eggs and move in with the sandtrout at the same time.

Let those bigger females go! Keep the males.

I agree with you on that 15" trout taste better. But I have been trying to catch a trophy trout for awhile. If I catch one, I might have to get him mounted or get a picture of him. I hear you can take a picture, get the measurements and weight and get a replica of them. Anyone know if this is true or not.

It's true ctfootball about the replicas and some people prefer them for they will last longer then a skin. A trophy is usually considered to be 30" and I have yet to hit that number. A couple 27" but nothing bigger. If I hit the 30" on artificial then I will have a skin mount made. Theres an ol' boy in Corpus who will mount skins and the wait or turn around on it is about 2 years. He gets $400 per fish and the work is done by a genius. No need to get cheap when mounting a nice trout. Trout are hard to mount and many times the finished product does not look realistic. The kid from Corpus does work unparallel to any other. Im sure there are some other good ones out and you can find one with research.
If I catch the fish of a lifetime it's going on the wall. Not some plastic replica made in upstate New York by a Chinaman. No matter how well produced the replica may be the fact remains that it is still a replica and has nothing of the original fish in it. If you do mount a skin have your taxidermist put her in a display case. For some reason most armatures or brat kids who look at a mount feel as though they should touch it. When you do catch a trout you want to mount, don't gut it. Get yourself a very wet towel an wrap it making sure the fins are flat and put it in the freezer. A fish preserved like this will keep for a few months. Good luck perusing your trophy, it will happen someday; but remember that a trophy trout on a wall sure looks a lot better if she was caught using artificial.

a 30 inch trout would taste just as good to me as a 15 inch trout would taste. That big girl better hope she doesn't take my bait on the wrong day. There are days when I might feel bad and let the fish go but on a good day, that fish is going home to my fryer!

Try a flounder sometime PiePuncher, it's a much better tasting fish. Stuff it with crab and shrimp and broil it. Don't be in such a hurry to fry "trophy trout". You sound ridiculous!
