In the early morn cast some piggies out into the 2nd gut in the surf for specks if these winds dont trash up the grass to bad. Late evenings try throwing some piggies in the ship channel around the charlie's pasture area. You may even chunk some plastics there if you should find some spanish macks....Packery channel and surrounding flats have produced fish for me in August in the past but I have not been there in a while. My opinion is the smaller piggies work better for me nothing bigger than 2" but thats just my preference.
If the winds are a howling throw some dead shrimp on a #4 or #2 hook in the surf and catch some whiting...nice eating fish when fried up. The hardheads are'nt that "big" of a problem in the surf. Im knocking on wood after that last statement.

Caught some very nice whiting a couple weeks ago in the very rough surf on dead shrimp. Caught small trout at night @ Charlie's Pasture and Station Street Piers along w/ nice whiting

Welcome aboard. These guy's have covered the surf. Try the lights at H. Caldwell at night. Use the sabiki to catch your bait, or fish spec rigs, and plastics in glow on 1/8-1/4oz. jigs

Thanks for the input men, My nephews and I will try them all. I grew up eating whiting when my family took us kids to Sarasota Fla. and enjoyed them. Truth be told as long as we don't strike out we will be happy campers.

How do you recommend rigging the piggy's when fishing the gut? do you rig the same for the gut and the ship channel?

Speaking of catching whiting, my 8 yr old and 11 yr old kids will be fishing in the surf with me during our Aug trip (wife might give it a go too). I thought about tying on silver spoons for the kids (plan is to fish around daylight) since they are versatile and catch a wide cariety of fish. But, I thought if things are slow on artificials I could re-rig their rods and target whiting. What is a good bait, fresh dead shrimp? Lures?

Fresh dead shrimp and peel it. I'll dehead the shrimp and break it in half and peel it. I use small #4 or #6 hooks and use about 1/2 -1 oz of weight depending on the size of the waves and current. Used this yesterday when I went to Surfside and got into a few nice whiting.
If the surf is calm, the spoons may be killer. Good luck.
