Went out Friday around 1pm to Granbury tailrace. Wasn't expecting much with the temp being 104 when I got there and the recent GA outbreak...and boy was I wrong. They were generating water was spilling through the dam. The water was cool. As a good omen I was lining up my spey rod and I heard a splash just to my right. I turned quickly fearing a snake(cause that's what I fear) had decided to join me, but it was a channel cat and a spotted gar battling it out over a palm sized shad. The cat won and the gar was left to eyeball me until he swam off. Once lined up and ready to go I started hitting the deeper pools(I had to do this from memory because all the landmarks, save one, were underwater). A few cast in and a carp came and tried to hammer my sreamer. He missed and I hooked his gill plate. Once I let him off I moved deeper in and cast to the edges. I had a follow by the same(?) spotted gar from earlier that was treating my fly like a cat treats your leg. He kept swimming along side it and brushing up next to it but wouldn't hit it. I cast back to the same area and a catfish hit the fly. A nice fish and the first true hooked fish on the spey rod. Again casting back to the edge over a deep hole as I stripped back I had a follow by a long nose gar this time about a 4 footer. He swatted at my fly then swam off. I cast back in front of him and he quickly swam back and hit the fly hard. It was set square in his nose, but he chose not to make a run and instead slashed his head violently side to side and on the 7th or 8th slash, despite my best efforts to set the hook, he freed himself and swam off. Now unfortunatley before my next couple of casts I failed to inspect my fly and line to see what the damage to my tippet was from rocks, gar, etc and I cast to a new hole. The fly sank for about 1 second and just as I grabbed the line to start my retrieve a carp(fairly sizeable 15lbs?) shot up from the depths and smashed the streamer. This is a sizeable rabbit strip streamer tied on a size 2 60 degree jig hook, probably 3 inches long. I watched as he inhaled the entire fly to the tippet in his goofy looking mouth. It was probably the most visually stunning take I have ever seen. I set the hook and he tore off. My line shredded off the reel and as I fought for higher ground in the middle of the river, I felt the dreaded tension to slack line transition. I reeled in my line and the 0x tippet had snapped. I felt sick but happy that the fish were active. I landed one more smaller cat and then hit the road! All in all a great day.
Good spey casting practice good fish good water
Only a couple pics taken but will post tomorrow.

Nice job! I love spey stuff, I've been thinking of getting a spey rod for almost a year but haven't pulled the trigger yet.

. . . the most visually stunning take I have ever seen. That's a cool, memorable phrase. Anyway, you sure make it sound like a hotspot.
