I'll be heading down to Mustang/Padre later this month. Will be staying with the family on the beach and will have to do some surf fishing. I've fished the surf before and know to fish the guts and the cuts but where, along the beach should I stop and fish? Are any areas better than others or should I just look for baitfish? I usually camp just South of Bab Hall Pier on Padre but have stayed around Mustang Island SP before too. Any suggestions?

HH, if your camping on the beach, might try the Fish Pass jetties area of Mustang. Fish north of the jetties on that beach section. Jetties give some structure for trout, flounder, reds deeper. Last good report I've heard was the trout were thick north of BHP on calm mornings it's been hot! Along fish pass and Port Aransas beaches area. 'Course that can change in a day. Might check out Whoppers surf-masters website they might give a up to date report.....look for birds and baitfish if your going to cruise. Also look for where the breakers don't break in a spot, cut or washout there. Watch the waves coming up the beach any shorter or longer waves, deeper or shallower there might be a deep enough change in the depth to hold fish. Try the wade gut(1st gut) early and late. Silver spoons, soft plastics, topwaters on a calm morning, hard plastics in mullet or firetiger style color all work out there as does live shrimp and an Alameda. Might try the fish bites bait. Folks say it really works........when you heading down there, maybe we can meet up for a wade or two.....Either way, have a great trip.

HH exactly when are you going up there? I am planning on going that way myself maybe wife also but not exactly sure when i'm going. I've never tried fishing the surf at mustang, might be a good time to try it. Let me know when you'll be up there and maybe meet up.

TOO and Alex, I haven't been able to make the dates work yet so I don't know exactly when I'll be down yet. All I know is my wife has two months off for the summer and We're planning to go twice in the next couple of months.

Alex, do you live down in that area?

Okay, we have some dates! It looks like I'll be down there with the family June 13-15. We'll have our 20 month old with us so we'll be staying on the beach somewhere (to keep her busy). My wife and I will be back around July 6-9 and we will probably spend a couple of nights on the beach and a couple of nights in Rockport if I can get the reservations.

The wife has already said she doesn't mind if y'all come down to join me for a fish. I might try some of TOO suggestions from the jetties.

Boxy, it looks like you're gonna hit prime fishing time just before the full moon!

HH no I'm from san antonio. Am hoping to go 13-16 also. What beach will you be at, port a? If I do go that weekend I'll have a big red canopy on the beach, so maybe we might meet up,heh? Just hope the fish are biting. I wonder if anybody knows how the weed situation is like. Hope to see you there!! And keep your fingers crossed the fish are biting.

Weeds are bad right now along PINS. Last word, a couple of days ago, was Mustang Island was just as bad.
