Got a question for you "real" fishermen out there. I wanna catch some decent sharks in the surf. My biggest reel is a Penn Long Beach 67. It'll hold 325/50. But, I'm thinking more line might be better. Like 450/40 or even 550/30 (if it'll hold that). How about it? Any sugesstions? I'm hoping for a 4-6' bull or blacktip. Again, this is from the surf. Help is appreciated.

Hey Wannabe, I have a longbeach 68 I use for sharks and it is spooled with 40 lb big game. I really prefer capacity over line strength, because you will be able to tire them more on the runs and not risk being spooled so easily. My opinion is to utilize your drag with the lighter line. One drawback though is if you are running long off the beach, you have a higher risk of breakoff from chafing on the sand bars. That is a problem here with the shorter rods on the beach. ------------------ TexSafaris Outdoor Adventures

Thanks, Whopper. I kinda thought that would be the way to go. The Penn 67 is rated for 325/50, but I'd rather have about 450/40 on there for just the reason you stated. Never thought about line chaffing on sand bars though. My 9'6" rod won't help much there, but I've never caught a good shark, so I'll be thrilled just to get one on. Thanks for your input. It is valued!
