Seen a Pelican flashlight at Academy yesterday. That's going to be my next flashlight I buy. Submersible up to 500ft. Other than that all of my other flashlights are Maglights and I also get the cheap LED lights from Harbor Freight that can strap around my head.

Bushnell has a flashlight that has a huge bright square beam. Best flashlight I have ever seen. they call it an HD Flashlight.

Retirement best job ever.

I have a Pelican model 2000 I carried for 3--4 years doing foundry maintenance work and for 12 years since at home. For me I think this is the best flash light. It has a big clamp arm to fasten to a divers belt-pants. etc. It is explosion proof with no switch. You have to screw and unscrew the light housing on the barrel. It takes 3 c cells so won't tear up your budget like a $10.00+ refill for those tactical lights do. The Pelican model 2000 casts a good light but I'll have to say a Sure Fire tactical light puts out more light than I have ever seen. My son bought me one and I used it when checking on a night time disturbance. After a short time of usage it broke.

What do you need in a flashlight? How much money would you reasonably spend on one?

I have a 20 dollar light I carry with me every day in my pocket thats more powerful than a stock 3d cell Maglight. Its programmable to 3 different levels of brightness. It is also 3 inches long and about the diameter of a nickel.

That said I also have built a couple stock Maglites using P7 leds that will light up a house at night at over 200 yards. I can pick out birds in a tree in the back yard of my neighbor's house across the street.
Pretty much a flashlight that is as bright as a headlight. I have about 50 dollars to put the led and heatsink in that light.

Right now I'm about to build another with the newest most efficient led out there right now. Its the XM-L U2 and should have about 1000 lumens out the front. With led, heat sink and the regulation its going to cost around 50 dollars to do this mod.
Its just a hobby. There are a whole bunch of options for higher powered lights than you can find at the builders supply. It depends on what you want. The leds are much more energy efficient and will last a long time per charge.

@starthere: without more specific information about what you need this flashlight for, it's hard to suggest something that works well for you. Here's a 280 lumen tactical light that is affordable, rechargeable, water-proof and built tough. I use it as my multi-purpose flashlight. It's even built to break glass if need be. stir
