what's your best redfish lure and why? i fished alot of lures years ago when i was a kid, but gave them up for live and dead bait. now 25 years later,i want too try my LUCK with lures again and i'm just wondering what works best? i've caught a 34 inch and a 28 inch red last week on my rattle trap and FEEL like i need some more action,if you know what i mean??? it's a blast to catch a fish on a lure and i am trying too teach my 16 year old son how it's done.thanks for any and all input on this. fish on!

My go to artificial for redfish is a weedless goldspoon. Its easy to work and you can cast it a mile.

norton bull minnow with 1/16 ounce jig head.
jig it or slow retrieve works good. they seem to hit it when the bait falls.

My favorite is a copper colored rattle trap. I only have 1 left and they don't make that color anymore. I have to be careful not to lose this one. It is more effective in dirty water. When I lived in Friendswood and Alvin, we would go to Chocolate Bay and fish the oyster reefs with success. I have tried spinnerbaits, but haven't ever had much luck. I also use an avacado/red flake Deadly Dudley with a 1/4 jig head and bounce it off the sandy/grassy bottoms near Aligator Point. Trout love to hit the Dudleys too!
The hardest thing about fishing is figuring out what the fish want to eat.

i have a gold spoon, but have never caught a fish on it. how do you retrieve it? do you let it sink to the bottom?
any advice would be appreciated.

If I had only one lure to use for redfish on the flats, I would use a gold spoon. Been discussed before. See: How to fish gold spoon i have a gold spoon, but have never caught a fish on it. how do you retrieve it? do you let it sink to the bottom?
any advice would be appreciated.

As a newbie to redfishin, I have only caught one, on a small gold spoon at Highland Bayou park last month. He was a littlin that exploded 4 feet from the bank, and i wasn't prepared to get a hit there. Scared the cr#% outa me lol. And i tossed him back after I took his pic. I'd post the pic if I knew how, but he was just a baby afterall.
David.

fiannor, I caught many a good redfish at Highland Bayou. My buddy has a house there on the water and we do real good at night. It often surprises me the kind of fish you can get in those little bayous. My biggest fish to date have been a 33" red and a 22" flounder.
Just before the first cold snap the trout fishing there is incredible as well.

cudakilla I haven't fished at Highlands bayou pk in about a month, and it was still pretty warm then. Maybe I should go try again. other than the small red I didn't get a bite. In the summer if ya don't have a boat in this area it's diffucult to catch good fish cause they move out into deeper water it seems. My family has a camp on the crash boat basin near offits bayou, and it doesn't get decent till cooler weather). Only night fishin i've done is off the big piers on the beach the last few months. I go to HBP to practise my fly casting now n then, (new to it). Just recently i got into surf fishing but only been once so far.
Would love to know what you caught your big red on. And do you have any lure suggjestions? David.
