When I was idling out past the Kemah Boardwalk last weekend, early in the morning before sunrise, there were literally hundreds of these little black things at the surface of the water all around the channel. They looked sort of like turtle heads that you might see in a pond. Whenever my boat would get near them they would dive down under the water leaving a big swirl on the surface. I tried to shine a spotlight on them but still could not tell what they were. I never could get a good look at them before they would dive. Any idea what those things might have been?

GN,

Mullet will do that for sure. I've seen it many times in Florida.

Was anything striking at them? When that happens they will jump out of the water where you can see them.

Good luck.........

They're mullet. Everyone feeds them fries and bread and leftovers.

You definetly came across a large raft of mullets.
Excelent cut bait for bull reds and others in the surf.

Thanks guys. I've never seen anything like it but mullet sounds good. Do mullet just sit still on top of the water with their heads sticking out like that? I'm going out again tomorrow morning and I will have my castnet with me. I hope it's some big mullet that I can throw on my smoker or in a frying pan. No matter what some may say, mullet is delicious. With my luck I'll pull in a net full of water snakes. Maybe they taste good too. I'll let you know how it goes.

KK,

I always cooked them just like any other fish. Filet them, salt & pepper, cornmeal and deep fry. I have seen them B-B-Qed also. They were laid open, skin on, head off and sauced and pit cooked. Pretty tasty too! offtopic

Hope this helps..........

I go through the kemah Channel every time i take out the boat, and every morning i see the same thing. If you lookclosely they are opening and closing their mouths as the feed on food at the surface.

Definatly mullet, and the majority of them are finger mullet only about 2 inches long. It normaly only takes me about 3 casts of the cast net to have a days worth of bait.
