Just got back from the trip. Didn't do as much fishing as I had hope, I did go with the girlfriend, but did get to get out for about 3 hours one afternoon. Went to "The Fly Shop" as others had suggested.
I wanted to fish sand flats vs grass beds so he pointed me towards an area on the North East side of the island. I drove until there was a "road closed" barrier with one pushed of to the side so I just went on through. Drove until I couldn't get past the earth movers that were moving left-over sand off of the road and took the closest path onto the bay-side beach as possible. If you don't have a lot of ground clearance definitely hop onto the beach earlier and just keep driving north as it was a little deep where I jumped on.
I just picked a spot that I thought looked good about 2 miles from the end of the island, left the gf with a beach towel, umbrella, book, and a cooler and set out. There was a strong Southwesterly blowing about 20-25 mph that made fish pretty hard to spot. I just waded out North West until it was about knee high and I started running into some fish. After about 10 min I had my first shot. A red cruising about 35 feet away. First cast was good, saw the fly, chased it towards me but saw me at the last second and swam off. Took me a good 1.5 hours before I saw another decent fish which I was lucky enough to land. He was about 22" and it was my first red I'd ever caught. Obviously I didn't kill it, but I was excited I got out there by myself never having fished for reds before and bag one.
I don't think this was the best area to go but they were definitely around. I would travel further north towards the tip of the island if I went out again. The great thing was that you can get out there barefoot and not worry about stepping on anything besides little crabs. Anyone else have better luck in other areas? Definitely wanting to make another trip down soon.

Wasn't real obvious to me, a 22" red is both legal and tasty! (OK I let most of them go, but right now I have a hankerin for ceviche and the next legal red I pop is getting the juice!)

Haha, I hear you. We were actually going to make ceviche but had to cut our trip short so I cut the little fella go. Love that stuff.

BArefoot?! Bad idea. I was out there last July 2 separate days. DAy 1 just saw a bunch of fish, day 2 just saw a bunch of stingrays. Like every 10 steps another one swam past me. Spooky

Oh yeah, and "The Hole in the Fence" is now closed. Makes me sad. Do you know why? Are they developing that area? Thanks for the info!

I'm not really sure why. I just casually asked about it at the local fly shop and he said it's been closed up. It sounded like it might have been trespassing after all or some kind of nuisance for people going through. Maybe some locals on the forum know?
