My first Gar of any variety, caught it on a crank bait bass fishing on the Colorado.

Thats what i thought, he hit really hard too. Thought I had a nice fat bass until i got him turned and he came in pretty easy. Took a couple jumps next to the boat which was pretty cool.

It looks like a longnose, it's snout is twice as long as its head. Nice gar! cool

Clear water will have more spots, and young fish will have more spots.

Spots and markings are a terrible way to ID species.

Like fwbret said, longnose in clear water will get lots of spots. I've seen them in the Llano and Devil's River, as well as Lake Amistad with lots of spots (even 4ft long ones).

As far as I know, there are no reports of spotted gar hybridizing with longnose gar. Alligator gar, however, are known to hybridize with longnose gar. I've caught several of them myself.
