So...is "mandatory" evacuation enforceable? What's the REAL DEAL?

They can't force you to leave. However, if you choose to stay under mandtory evac. the may not come rescue you if it does get bad. I am not leaving period but I am also 80 miles from the coast.

We've been through 14 hurricanes...from Key West, to Brownsville, and one in Mexico...never evacuated until Rita. Maybe it's the years creepin' up on us...sometimes we feel like Hemingways' "Santiago"...don't want to fight anymore, and don't want to give up. We're going to stay next time..it's almost scary and it's okay at the same time. We're 4 miles from Galveston bay and about 16 miles from the gulf coast as the crow flies...it's going to be interesting to see what the rest of this season brings.

I had a boy blown back up here from Katrina. House he was living in was badly damaged by fallen trees. Good thing he was not there.
Cat 1-2 I might stay, anything bigger, time to go imho.

Sounds like you live near Bolivar, Leonardo. We left Beaumont early, arrived in the Dallas area about 13 hours later - evacuating sucked BADLY. I know a bunch of tough guys who rode out the Cat 3 and will swear they'll never do it again.

16 miles from the coast... scratch Bolivar, sounds like you live near Anahuac.
