Hey guys, I'm just getting into the bluegill fishing type. It looks very fun where you guys catch them, and I can't wait to go out for the first time.
I'm asking for any tips, on anything!! When, how, what to use!!!
Anything will help!! Thanks

Big D,

Bream fishing is fun - don't make it too big a deal. Start with a rod, cork, hook and small sinker. Get some worms - dig 'em or go to Wal Mart and get the trout size worms. For hooks, get a small circle hook or a long shank cricket type hook size 6.

Bait the hook with a small part of a worm. We cut the Wal Mart worms into 3 or 4 pieces. Fish around a dock, brush, reeds, etc.

Have fun and let us know how you do.

"Featherjig" is one hundred percent right. Keep it simple and fun! Academy has some ultra light Combos that are excellent and do not cost that much. Get some size 6 cricket hooks, small shots size 5,and some small floats. Start out using worms and then get after em. Sunnies are a very fun fish to target and catch. Give us a report on how you do.

Ordinarily I would not dare contradict the gurus here, but remember this guy is in the Fort Worth area, not San Antonio, so the sunfish will be smaller and a size 6 hook is too large. I recommend a size 10 Gold Aberdeen hook or a #8 cricket hook. Beginners should avoid circle hooks.

Use any ultra light rod and reel. I personally prefer a spincast for bream instead of spinning, but either will do. Six pound Trilene XL is the line of choice.

Rig the line with a Gizmo bobber stopper, a bead, a 7/8 " balsa oval slip bobber, then a #5 split shot and finally the Gold Aberdeen #10 hook. All this is available at Walmart. To start out, set the Gizmo bobber stopper at 3 feet.

Buy some Red Wrigglers or crickets for bait. The nightcrawlers sold at Walmart and bait shops are not good bream bait. As Banker said, some of them have the red wrigglers also. Pet Smart has the red wrigglers and crickets. When you get into bream fishing big time you will want to order crickets in quantities of 1000 from a good cricket farm such as Armstrongs.

Lake Weatherford is the best bream lake in the Fort Worth area. There are many other ponds and lakes with good populations. Go out at first light and the fish should bite until 8:00-9:00 AM. The full moon is July 15, and the fish will be on the beds.

Good luck. Let me know if I can help you. I have been bream fishing in this area for 65 years.

+1 to what Smithaven posted. Small hooks are better for all the 'gills...another good live bait is the mealy worm, sold at Academy.

If you really get into this, you might want to look into some fly fishing for 'em...its a blast.

Right now the Docks are holding some very good fish. Also try fishing tree lines.
