I am going to Port O'conner this coming weekend and I have never fished in this area before. I will mostly be fishing for reds and specs. My boat runs 2-3 ft so I can't go very shallow. I'd appreciate any tips on where to fish and what baits are good. Thanks

There is a secret shell pad about 300-400 yards west of the biggest platform in Esprito Santos Bay. You can thank my dad for that one, God rest his soul. He was the manager of Ladd Petroleum that placed that platform in the 80s. He had them dump a barge of shell there for us to have a fishing spot. We had it all to ourselves for a few years but it gradually got discovered. We used to limit on trout there with a gold spoon.
There are a lot of good spots in the back bays but you ahve to know your way or you'll bury your boat.
We also did real well on the backside of the Matagorda jetties, west side, with live shrimp catching redfish.
You can do well at Pass Cavala but again, it can be dangerous and shallow.

Go to the big jetties and fish the bottle neck area. The water needs to be moving. Keep moving until you locate the fish.

The few times I tried that bottlneck area the water was moving so swift that it was difficult to anchor and then when you did you had a hard time getting your bait down since it got carried so swiftly.
I suppose we are talking the same thing. Inside the channel on the side where it goes from being wider to narrower.
Tide can be pretty swift at Pass Cavallo too.
If he was there over memorial day he won't have any trouble finding his way around. Just follow the boats. My first time to POC we even found the route from Army hole up to Saluria. A good map, accurate sonar and gps made a big difference of course although my buddy did a lot of polling.
