Night crawlers, bobber, and some grassy banks. Or get a cast net, find some shad by boat ramps and net em.

Chicken livers work. Craw fish if you can find them are great.

Cut your perch into steaks. 3/4" up to 2" wide depending on perch size and hook size. Be sure to use the freshest bait possible. I like to cut them while still flopping. More blood that way. All of the perch is good bait; head, gut pocket, fillets, even the little chunk of meat in front of the tail. Do not be scared of using a very large (for most fish) hook. I catch 1/2 lb fish on 8/0 hooks regularly. 5/0 & 8/0 Team Catfish circle hooks work very well. Do your homework on how to properly use a circle before you use it. Remember to let the fish do as much of the hooking as possible. If your bank fishing you need either patients or the physical ability to hump your gear all over the place. Fish an area 30 mins, if no bites move on; or just sit it out and wait for the fish. Both of these methods are equally effective if you know what to look for. I started out moving around a lot and eventually got where I sit on fish more and more. My total weight and average size of fish have went way up, fast action has dropped slightly. This is a self serving statement, but jump ahead in the learning curve and hire a quality guide. Cliff Hill is top notch in South Texas, Bobby Kubin is great in the DFW area, Central Texas hit up either myself or Spud. That's the guides I would recomment, I am sure there are thousands of others out there. Stay away from the low-ball guys. While it might be financially appealing to go out on a half day trip for $50, a lot of times you get what you pay for. Let the guide know that you want an "instructional" trip. This way he shows you how and where to catch bait, what to look for, how and why he sets up his gear the way he does, ect.
Good luck and welcome to the TFF

I made some catfish bait last year... I had to make it because it grossed my husband out too much... go figure haha. I used the kitchen blender and put in left over fish pieces that we caught that weekend (any fish will work) Add some garlic and cheese. Use cat-tails for texture, it makes it stringy so it will stay on the hook. And then you just let it sit in the sun for a while until it gets good and smelly

For fish bait that is.
