I have had problems with the Trokar flipping hooks, I seem to bend them after setting the hook on a fish or two with braid, flipping grass or bushes. I had been using the BMF flipping hook without any problems, went back to them and still no issues with bent hooks, recently tried the gamu heavy cover (since they are the same hook as the BMF)did have trouble with the shrink wrap after a couple fish, but seemed to get a lot better if you will take a lighter to it beforee using it and melt the shrink wrap a little better, but IMO the trokars are now where near worth it, can handle bent hooks and sometimes a rolled point

I love them, I'd REALLY love them if they were half price.

I will say they are excellent for setting the hook at long distances.

also, watch your fingers, they do like to bite.

The gama ring hooks are the best made. If you have never tired them yous should, with the ring, the fish can't throw the hook. And super strong, just my 2cents

For me, Trokar is an improvement to Owner and Gama. They have hooks in their line that are similar to what Owner and Gama offers, but just a bit better. Not to sound like a Trokar Salesman, but this is why I use them:

*They are much sharper. What that buys you isn't on the fish you get good hook sets on, but on the ones you don't.
*I know they had a point roll over issue the first year in production, that has since been remedied. That is no longer a problem.
*They are also made in the USA, not in Japan/China. So instead of sending your money over seas, you are helping the US economy out.
*They have actually improved the barb of the hook as well. Making it not only harder for the fish to throw the bait, but they are harder to get the hook out of the fish.

What all this adds up to, day to day, isn't probably worth the expense. But over a season, it adds up to more fish in the boat. Over a tournament season, more checks cashed. Plus you are keeping your money in the USA where it belongs, not sending it over seas. You can't really judge these hooks in a day or weeks worth of fishing. You need to look at them for a year and see what they can do for you. The next time that 7lb bass throws your 10" worm back at you in a tournament and you are using an Owner, maybe you catch that fish with a Trokar? Who knows.

And also keep your eyes open for deals on them. I found 3 packs in the Cabela's bargain cave this week for $3.50 each. Cabela's in Allen ran a promo during their Grand Opening if you bought 2 packs they sent you a $10 Cabs gift Card. The last 2 years at the PAA event in Garland they were buy 1 get 1 free on the hooks. The PAA has a deal if you join the PAA you get them for a 40% discount (I think, I haven't joined yet). Don't get me wrong, Gamas and Owners are great hooks. To me, Trokars are just a bit better overall. And my money is staying in the US, which to me is a big deal.

Trokar hooks are kind of a joke at my house....any hook company that uses Shaw Grigsby as a spokesman for toughness just cannot have a tough product. (they try to make him dark and mysterious with lightening, storms et al.....but c'mon.....its Shaw)....why not just use Kittens?, same effect for me.

Don't get me wrong I like Shaw....but I am pretty sure my wife can whip him in a fist fight.

I just don't lose alot of fish on the Gamma's...so why switch?

Be careful, I hear that Shaw takes Judo lessons on the side. He can turn a Triton into kindling faster than Fukae can by the sounds of it.

To me, buying Trokar hooks isn't any different then fishing with Lucky Craft baits over another brand. Or using a Dobyn's rod over say a Bass Pro built rod that is 1/2 or a 1/4 of the price. Using Fluorocarbon line VS Stren Mono. Using Tungsten VS lead weights. You could go on and on.

Owner/Gama/Mustad, all make a hook that will catch you fish, that is what they are designed to do. Trokars have improved on that design, sharper, better designed barb, etc, etc. That $1.99 bargain bin crankbait will catch fish just as well as a Lucky Craft will when the fish are feeding hard. That isn't why you buy Lucky Craft baits. A Bass Pro Extreme rod is a good rod for the money, and in most situations works just fine. That isn't why you buy a Dobyn's rod. It isn't about what an Owner/Gama hook does for you, it is about what a Trokar hook does for you above those hooks.

I am not knocking Extreme rods or Stren Mono, used them both for a long long time. There are reasons those that swear by Flurocarbon do so. Reasons that Tungsten is better than lead. Not everyone agrees with those reasons. Trokar hooks are not for everyone, just like Fluorocarbon line and Tungsten weights are not for everyone. But to me they give those that use them a bit of an edge. Just like Tungsten, Fluorocarbon line and Dobyn's rods do (I don't even own a Dobyn's rod yet, but I can tell you they are an improvement).

Do be careful what you say around Shaw though. He may look all nice and innocent, but I have heard he is changing that image with those Judo lessons. You might even see him wearing a black belt during the Classic in 2012.

I think they would be good for tournaments only. Too expensive for the way I fish, Always breaking off. But I dont tournament fish either, I have tried them, yes there sharp and draw blood easily but I cant really notice a big diffrence.

Overpriced. Does it really cost the company that much more to make them a little sharper than the others?

But have you seen the fancy packaging? That's got to cost them a bundle! I'd rather have them at a reasonable price in a brown paper bag or something.

Here is my story about the Trokar hooks. I was fishing a tourny and lost 6 keepers in a row after the hook set. Fish were not that big but 2 of them were 2.5-3 lbers. I got so ticked because I could not figure out what was happening. Checked my hooks they looked great still sharp barb was good too. I was so mad that I just turned up the T-motor went away from the bank and decided to regroup. Tied on my trusty Owner hooks and went back and tried again. Did not lose a fish the rest of the day and boated a 7.89 too. Finished 3rd by less than a pound and had one 14" fish and another 16" fish. Those hooks cost me over $600 that day! mad realmadTried them again while fun fishing and same thing happened again! bang So my advice is leave them at the store and but 2X's the amount of Owner hooks!

Set the hook a little harder and save your money. Don't fall for pricing hype!
