Think guys, the majority of the fish caught don't tire out to the point to were they have to get energy back up before releasing. Take your hook out and put him back in the water. I don't understand why this topic always comes up. And common sense goes a long way.

Yur keywords are "the majority" i dont want to only know how to properly take care of the majority of the fish. I rather know how to take care of everything i catch, extremely tired or not.

And its likely the topic keeps coming up because, as roadtrip says, the science behind this does keep changing.

However, ty for the info.

When you hold them in your hands how do you hold them? By the lip or sides or what?

The bigger fish, bass in my case, I will hold by the lower lip and the tail until I feel her start to kick. After that I will release the lower lip and remain a firm yet gentle grip on the tail until she pulls a bit more, then finally letting her go.

Thats a really good idea. I think im gonna do that now for my fish instead of swishing them.

Thanks!

Depending on how long the fish has been out of the water, I usually just drop it back in, or if it has been out for a while, I usually hold it in the water, supporting its belly, and waiting til it feels strong enough to swim off on its own. Don't swish it around though, just barely touch the underside of the fish while supporting it.

Moving them back and forth, does have a tendency to move a little extra oxygenated water through their gills.

Unless they are too short, then I like the tripple backflip and try to stick it with no splash.
