My 150 johnson has started something new and I was wondering if any of y'all had any ideas. This problem only happens every once in a while but it still concerns me. When i am idling in gear the rpms will suddenly fall from around 1000 to 500 and the motor sounds real quiet then when I throttle up it sounds like my lower unit smacks a rock then the rpms come up and it runs great. The only thing I have changed since this started was the prop. Thanks for the help.

I have a friend of mine that has a 97 or 98 Mercury 200 EFI. When he puts it in forward gear it will idle 10 or 15 ft or so and then he will get the same sound. It sounds like it hits a rock or something. It does not do it any other time including reverse. He asked me what I thought and I told him what Mr. Purdy said, "probably not good".
Set the hook first, ask questions later!!!

Can be a bearing anywhere in the lower unit trying to seize. Most likly the top main shaft bearing. I would think he has checked the prop. Had a guy change his prop, started the motor and broke the back off of the lower. Carrier was sticking out.
