I want to catch some carp. Any advice about flies, locales, technique etc would be appreciated. I live in the McKinney area and am particularly interested in fishing the flats on Ray Bob.

Much obliged, J.

You have the lake right. The flats by the Marina are noted to be good. I need to get out there soon.

As for flies...buggy looking, legs and hair seem to work. Some times crayfish patterns work.

Here's a pretty good link to some carpy looking flies:

Just about anywhere that there is skinny water at raybob you can walk in and find carp. The fly doesn't seem to matter to much something in size 6 or 8 that is buggy looking (see my post on simply carp fly) What is important is that you land it or strip it right infront of the carps face wait for them to move over it and set the hook.

The fishing has been great all spring and is only getting better...that said I have been fishing all over the n. texas area for carp with a fly rod and have pretty much found them in every lake.

Brad Befus and Barry Reynolds [literally) wrote the book on fly fishing for carp. They seem pretty excited about the clouser swimming nympth fly for carp.

As someone that fly fishes for carp 4-5 times a week....and spent the last decade using euro angling tactics to target carp..I can tell you the fly is the smallest aspect of successfully angling for carp

Thanks guys, I appreciate it. Planning on making a trip to Ray Roberts as soon as I find the time and a new pair of flats boots.

The very most important thing is the Whataburger on the way to the lake:

I live on Lake Texoma and have located two flats were carps have been feeding since the first part of June. Now all of a sudden they are completely gone in those locations (at least in the mornings when I found them before). Do carp migrate or maybe start feeding later in the day when the water temp. get so high.

Thanks,

Jim
