I made it back to Mustang Island this past week for the first time in five years. All boat launches were extremely crowded, except for the $million plus facility at Packery Channel. There wasn't a single boat there the entire week. This despite the presence of construction crews who, I guess, are expanding the facility.

There are some nicely produced signs, however. They warn facility users to hide all the contents of their vehicles. I guess that goes a way to explain things, huh.

To the City of Corpus Christi, or the State of Texas: Boys, there's no sense in spending another million tax dollars expanding a theft vector. Apparently warning signs don't deter theft. Five years ago, you couldn't travel three miles on the beach or five miles on 361 without encountering CC police. Now? Nada. When citizens (read: legals) start policing these matters, will the CC police be there to arrest them?

Patt: its funny how I was thinking back to being a kid down in Port A back in the 70's. I could walk/fish anywhere I wanted to, the jetty, Caldwell, boat basin etc... and as long as I stayed off the road I had no problems even at 4:00am. Now I will not let my 14 year old boy outta my sight when he is here...The Nueces County Constable office used to have a great presence here, I guess budget cuts have resulted in less coverage. I have no idea just guessing.

Yeah Port A has come to attract too many people. With that you get the good and the bad. I long for the days when there wasn't a single national franchise hotel on the island. They were all mom & pop places. Most of the folks there were a few families and fishermen.

You never had to worry about leaving fishing gear in the bed of your truck at the hotel overnight. Now you can't even run into Whataburger without some fool trying to steal your gear.

Don't get me wrong, I still love my Port A. Just wish it wasn't so commercialized now. One day in the very near future it will be permanent home.

It is amazing the transformation over just the last 10-15 years. We love the place and just closed on a beachfront condo, so many more trips for me! It can get crowded but I personally love to be there October-Januray when its least crowded.
