Hey yall,

Me and my boy went fishing yesterday evening.
He's been wanting to catch something bigger than the usual palm size panfish. So I hoped we can land a nice size fighter (like a catfish or carp) for him.

Money is tight right now, so I made some bait from randomly picked ingredients:

- Sliced Hotdogs
- Olive Oil
- Garlic Salt

Mixed altogether.
We got a few bites, but only landed a green sunfish.
The bait is also very messy.

Can yall recommend any good brands or recipes?

Sounds like you fish small ponds. Which means channel cats more than likely. Is go to academy and get some cj's punch bait. A small container will cost you about 4 bucks put in on a #6 treble. Carolina rigged. That will get you on some cats.

I've had great luck on Danny King's Punch bait on a #4 treble hook fished under a bobber for channel cats.

If you are fishing deep water a slip bobber works.

Never caught any huge ones but I've fished next to guys using all kinds of concoctions and I out caught them.

I find it sometimes at Walmart and always at Cabelas

Something on the simple side for both cats and carp.Used canned sweet corn, drain almost half of the juice then replace with vanilla extract.Just put straight on a #6 single hook.Or you can use plain white bread balled on the hook. For a little added help mix some corn syrup and vanilla extract together and dip the baits in it just before casting.Make sure you set the drag on the light side. The carp tend to grab and run and you don't want the kid losing his setup.Hope it helps

Okay, thanks yall.

The bait recipe I listed above seems okay, but another 'con' about it is that it falls apart easy. The meat just breaks apart and even falls off on some casts.

But I'll definitely check out the punch baits and corn.

Thanks again

+1
I've caught lots of carp and catfish both on canned sweetcorn and on white bread. You also have to put up with the turtle bite, but I've had to deal with them with punchbaits too.

Big Marvs for the Channels and Cut Shad for the Blues. Live perch for the Flatheads. As for carp corn and doe balls.
